Winner: Clara Bagenal George, Senior Engineer - Elementa Consulting
#BPA2020 News: We visit Clara Bagenal George, our very first CIBSE Building Performance Engineer of the Year
According to her bosses at Elementa Consulting, Clara Bagenal George’s above-and-beyond attitude and her true passion for sustainable building performance make her a stand-out engineer.
Bagenal George is a senior Chartered Engineer working across the sustainability and mechanical teams and leading mechanical, environmental analysis and sustainability consulting projects. She has worked on many innovative low-energy projects, including Hackbridge Primary – a net-zero energy and Passivhaus school – and a fossil-free residential development in Brighton.
She shows a strong commitment to championing sustainable engineering and helping the environment. This led her to launch the London Energy Transformation Initiative in May 2017 to challenge the failings of existing energy policy in driving design solutions that encourage and deliver improved building performance. The initiative has successfully brought together more than 250 construction industry professionals to develop proposals for energy policy in the new London Plan. The Draft Plan published in November 2017 contained about 70% of its recommendations, and can be expected to drive improvement in the building performance of new buildings in London.
She consistently promotes women in the industry, championing diversity and equality and establishing an internal Women in Engineering group at Elementa. She encourages and assists female engineers to become STEM NET ambassadors and supports Women in Building Services Engineering and Women in Sustainable Construction and Property.
Judges’ comments:
This is the first year that this award has been judged, and CIBSE was delighted with both the quality and varied backgrounds and experience of the shortlisted finalists in this inaugural year. The award recognises the important work done by practising building services engineers and their contribution to the built environment, celebrating individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to engineering in 2015-2017.
Comparing the achievements of high-performing individuals with such different skills, specialisms and project experience proved predictably fascinating and challenging for the judges, who were united in agreeing that they had definitely met six to watch, in terms of future careers and potential influence on projects, colleagues and the wider industry.
