Will Arnold

Head of Climate Action - The Institution of Structural Engineers

Will is a Fellow and staff member of The Institution of Structural Engineers, and is both a Chartered Structural Engineer and Chartered Environmentalist. In his role at IStructE, Will is responsible for embedding climate action into all aspects of the institution's work. He is responsible for driving the update of minimum standards for institution members, developing supporting guidance, and leading collaboration with wider industry. Will is the lead author of Part Z (an industry proposal for embodied carbon regulation in the UK) and is helping to deliver both the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard, and the Built Environment Carbon Database. Prior to joining the Institution, he worked as a practising structural engineer for more than a decade at Arup. In recognition of his work instigating change in the field of structural sustainability, Will holds the IStructE President’s Award, and the Memcom Outstanding Achievement Award.

Jan Artemenko

An experienced Buildings Digital Engineering practitioner and strategist with demonstrable and proven experience in successfully delivering Buildings projects and digitalisation strategies within an engineering consulting environment. Working with Stantec’s teams and clients throughout all stages of projects to identify, clarify and resolve complex issues critical to clients' strategic and operating success.

Marion Baeli

Principal, Sustainability Transformation - Stantec

An award-winning architect and author who specialises in low energy design and retrofit, I have designed and delivered many large scale, complex projects. With sector experience that spans the whole spectrum of housing, from prime to affordable, as well as significant office projects. My work on existing buildings often involves the re-imagining and retrofit of sites for new uses and new places.

Passionate and authoritative on building fabric, energy use and net zero carbon design, I approach sustainability with a pioneering attitude. My book ‘Residential Retrofits: 20 case studies’ is described as ‘an invaluable text for those working in residential retrofit’. I am frequently invited to speak about retrofit at industry events and universities. It is in this role that I seeks to inspire and empower others to become the next construction industry leaders. I am a board director of the Passivhaus Trust and an architecture awards judge for the AJ and Architecture Today.

Jon Belfield

Director - Sustainable Development Foundation

Jon is Director of the Sustainable Development Foundation (www.SDFoundation.org.uk), which aims to drive the UK property and construction industries towards exemplary sustainability practices, and was recognised during COP26 as a UNECE International Centre of Excellence for High Performance Buildings. He is also Chief Executive of the Passivhaus Trust (www.passivhaustrust.org.uk), which is the official body for promoting and protecting the Passivhaus standard in the UK.

Through the SD Foundation, Jon has helped to develop the Alliance for Sustainable Building Products (www.ASBP.org.uk), the Building Performance Network (www.BPN.org.uk), the Good Homes Alliance (www.goodhomes.org.uk), the National Retrofit Hub (www.nationalretrofithub.org.uk), and the Sustainable Traditional Buildings Alliance (www.STBAuk.org), as well as supporting other projects on sustainable schools, healthcare buildings and the SuperHomes Network.

Emma Bushell

Emma is the Energy & Carbon Manager at the City of London Corporation. She leads on the management and procurement of City’s energy supplies, the decarbonisation of the City’s housing portfolio and collaborates to deliver the City’s target of net zero in its operations by 2027. With over 15 years’ experience in sustainability in the built environment she has previously led on energy and sustainability for Southern Housing Group and Octavia Housing where she developed a Retrofit Strategy and improved the performance of their heat networks. At Lewisham Council she delivered a £4M Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme project to drive down energy use across seven corporate sites and led on the development of a strategic district heat network. Emma has a strong background in building performance. At Max Fordham she acted as Soft Landings Champion on a range of projects and carried out the post occupancy fine tuning of controls.

Mat Colmer

Senior Innovation Lead - Innovate UK

Mat Colmer is a Senior Innovation Lead at Innovate UK, which is part of UK Research and Innovation. Mat leads Innovate UK’s Transforming Construction and Net Zero Heat activities. He is responsible for curating and integrating activities across the construction and renovation portfolios, sharing and scaling innovations that enable people and places to be fit for the future.

Mat is an expert specialist in advancements that shape our urban and built environments with a focus on applying new processes, data, and technologies to make our built environment more liveable, affordable, healthy, and human. His extensive experience has been gained through working at the forefront of innovation in low-carbon technologies, energy efficiency, and the process of optimising domestic and non-domestic building performance by learning, monitoring, and continuous improvement.

Darren Coppins

With over 30 years experience practising Mechanical Building Services Engineering and over 20 years experience in Building Physics, Darren maintains a balance between systems design, modelling and in use operational analysis to help understand the intricacies and challenges of achieving real building performance.  One of Darren’s previous projects was claimed to be the ‘Most sustainable building in the world’ by The Guardian.

Darren has assisted with past CIBSE publications including AM11 and TM54, and was part of the early team of consultants who helped prove NABERS Design for Performance (DfP) use case in the UK.  This led to Darren becoming one of the first DfP Independent Design Reviewers and CIBSE trainer for Advanced Simulation for DfP.

As an independent engineer, Darren enjoys a wide range of different challenges from early stage design to building pathology, in a role he considers to be stimulating, fulfilling and enjoyable.

Tony Day

Tony is currently an independent consultant specialising in low-carbon solutions in the built environment. Tony started his career in hospital engineering before joining London South Bank University to teach and research building services engineering. At LSBU he established the MSc in Sustainable Energy Systems, and was instrumental in setting up the Centre for Efficient and Renewable Energy in Buildings (CEREB). After a short spell in industry with Team (EAA Ltd), in 2012 he joined the newly established International Energy Research Centre (IERC) at the Tyndall National Institute in Cork as Executive Director. Here he built a successful research team with a focus on strong industry collaboration in areas such as smart grids, peer-to-peer energy trading, low-carbon buildings, and enhanced deployment of low-carbon solutions.  

He is a Fellow of both CIBSE and the Energy Institute and the immediate past chair of the CIBSE HVAC Systems Special Interest Group. He was chair of the CIBSE working group on Electrical Engineering for Net Zero Buildings, and is also chair of the BSI Committee on Standards for Energy Management. 

Kathryn Donald

Director, Digital Design & Building Performance Modelling - Max Fordham 

Kathryn is the Digital Design and Building Performance Modelling Director at Max Fordham LLP. Through her 15 years’ experience as a building services and low carbon consultant with the Practice, she has developed extensive expertise in low energy building design. As a Project Engineer, Kathryn has also developed a real-world understanding of the opportunities and challenges of deploying digital design on projects and how it could be used to enhance sustainable design.

In her current role, Kathryn leads both the Digital Design and Building Performance Modelling teams at Max Fordham. The Digital Design Team are leading the Practice’s transition to a fully digital design environment, developing digital tools, processes, content and training; the Building Performance Modelling Team are delivering complex energy and carbon modelling, working with the Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health (MEP) Engineering Teams to deliver truly low energy building design.

Sally Godber

Director - WARM & Coaction

Sally is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, Passivhaus Certifier and a member of the UK Technical Panel reporting to the Passivhaus Institut, Germany. She set up WARM with her dad in 2009 to deal with the performance gap she saw in her own projects and continues to be fascinated by understanding errors and how to improve upon them. She will talk to anyone who will listen about this, which led to setting up Coaction CIC training alongside other leading professionals.

She has vast experience in the design and construction of larger low energy residential and commercial buildings, as well as building services. She has completed multiple personal builds including her own Passivhaus home and EnerPHit office.

Jaime Gomez-Aller

I am a passionate advocate of employing a holistic view in data center development. Working at AQ Compute as Sustainability and Innovation Director, I focus on the development of highly sustainable infrastructures, with a Net Zero architecture, aligned with the ESG objectives needed for a sustainable future.

I have worked in past years to enable decentralized and efficiently cooled IT infrastructures that turn heat into something usable, acting in project design and management, as well as international business development.

As a truly believer of contributing to the data center sector's knowledge, I am actively involved in industrial associations, whose main objective is to create guidance. I co-lead the Heat Reuse subproject of the Open Compute Project and I am a member of the ASHRAE Spain Chapter, co-chairing the data center committee.

Rob Griffiths

Starting a multi-skilled Apprenticeship nearly 30 years ago Rob has had an interesting career.

Initially working in the Electronics and automative industries Rob Designed and project managed Automation,  Robotics and CNC systems from concept design through to detailed schematic design, programming, project management and installation.

Seeking a change Rob then moved into Building Services Engineering at Hoare Lea where he worked on a variety of projects including Sports and Stadia, theme parks, Hospitals, Innovative Residential schemes, commercial and many more including some periods within the Middle East.

It was during this time that Rob developed an interest in Sustainability, renewable generation and energy storage systems.

Rob now leads the Building Services team for Atkinsrealis in Wales. Rob and the team help clients meet their renewable and whole life carbon aspirations in new and retrofit projects, including some award winning commissions.

Technical Director - People Powered Retrofit Limited

Marianne is Technical Director at People Powered Retrofit, working on the development of services, training, and tools to support more and better domestic retrofit across the UK. She has more than a decade of experience in retrofit project design, delivery and policy work. As well as supporting individuals to retrofit their own homes, Marianne has worked on scaling up retrofit in social and community-led housing – from TSB Retrofit for the Future, through work with Community Land Trusts and cooperatives, and on several large-scale social housing decarbonisation fund projects in her time at URBED. Whilst at URBED supported the development of sustainable buildings and neighbourhoods. She worked on individual projects as an architect, but also carried out policy research and policy and building performance evaluation. Through this she developed a keen understanding of both the theory and the practicalities of delivering real-world building performance.

Jeff House

With over 25 years’ experience in the Building Services sector, including consultancy, design and contracting, Jeff plays a key role within Baxi Heating responsible for policy and legislative advocacy. Jeff has a wealth of technical, commercial, and legislative knowledge relating the residential and commercial building services sector, including low and zero carbon technologies In his current role Jeff is widely involved in setting the agenda regarding legislation and policy for the heating sector, regularly representing both Baxi Heating and the wider industry at Government and trade body meetings to offer in depth advice and analysis. www.baxi.co.uk

Andrew leads digital delivery and innovation for Introba, a global engineering and consulting firm. These responsibilities also extend across other sister companies such as TYLin and Landrum & Brown, which form part of Sidara, the parent company. 

Andrew develops and manages the group’s digital strategy and approach, working with different sector teams across the globe to develop digital twin technologies and optimise their workflows. He also leads initiatives across the group of companies, such as the Elevation Awards, which is our internal Innovation awards program which is across the 3 companies and helps to build a culture of worldwide innovation.

Andrew has more than 27 years of experience in the built environment, working on many large-scale projects across different sectors globally. He is passionate about data and how we can maximise its use through the life cycle of our projects. Andrew is proud to be one of the first digital Fellows of CIBSE and is the current Co-Chair of the Society of Digital Engineers (SDE).

Aidan Kelly

Senior Mechanical Engineer & Digital Lead - XCO2

Aidan is a chartered mechanical engineer with a passion to bring high-quality buildings to life, incorporating the latest and most innovative technologies to deliver low-energy new buildings and decarbonised retrofits. This drive has led him to become a chartered engineer, heat network consultant and digital engineering specialist with a keen interest in the digitalisation of the construction industry and adoption of process technologies underpinned by BIM. He has a wide range of projects under his belt, from the UK’s first Passivhaus Secondary School to the regeneration of 340 council homes in South London.

Outside of XCO2, he is currently a member of CIBSE’s Knowledge Generation Panel and Technical Lead of the CIBSE Society of Digital Engineering Steering Group, working with leads from other consultancies to help to improve the proliferation of digital engineering tools and drive standardisation across the industry.

Andrew Krebs

Andrew is CIBSE's digital engineering consultant, and a past chair of the Society of Digital Engineering. He has been in the industry since 2008 having undergone the transition from an MEP engineer to digital engineering.

As a Chartered Building Services Engineer, I’ve worked on various projects, including Hospitality, Office, Healthcare, Education, Retail, Residential, Aviation, and Data Centres. My involvement has been in sustainable design, using the latest technologies to construct environmentally friendly buildings of all sizes.

The definition of ‘environmentally friendly’ has evolved. It used to mean ‘best practice’ or good performance against benchmarks. However, as the earth’s environment has deteriorated, our goals have shifted towards having a positive impact and aiming for ‘zero’ and beyond.

‘Environmentally friendly’ now means creating positive environmental impacts. This complex task requires the commitment of a generation of professionals. We all need to participate and act now. This is not just a job, but a mission for the betterment of our planet.

Building Performance Researcher - Four Walls Consultants

Ian is an independent Building Performance Researcher, involved in field-based research to evaluate the energy performance, indoor environmental quality, and comfort of buildings. The outcomes of his research are often used to help inform building standards. A long-standing partner of the AECOM-led technical team that supports the UK Government (now the Building Safety Regulator, part of HSE) and, separately, the Welsh Government, Ian has a key role in developing revisions to Parts F and L of the Building Regulations for England and Wales. He has led major revisions to Approved Document F, including recent improvements to ventilation standards during the retrofitting of existing homes, and has developed guidance within Approved Document L, intended to reduce the performance gap.

Anastasia Mylona

Dr Anastasia Mylona, CIBSE's Technical Director, is a Chartered Engineer and a CIBSE Member. In her capacity, she spearheads CIBSE's Technical Team, shaping the institution's technical vision, defining knowledge priorities and establishing policy positions.
Dr Mylona previously served as CIBSE's Head of Research, overseeing the institution's knowledge and research endeavours. During this time, she fostered collaborations with both academia and industry, concentrating on developing guidance pertinent to embodied carbon, circular economy principles and providing crucial climate information for future-proofing buildings and their services.
Her contributions extend to advising the Government on the implementation of Part O – Assessment of overheating risk in new dwellings in England, a component of Building Regulations.
D. Mylona's professional journey began with architectural training, followed by Ph.D. studies at the Welsh School of Architecture, focusing on the environmental performance of buildings. Subsequently, she pursued post-doctoral research at the University of Oxford, exploring the impacts of climate change on the built environment.

Robin Nicholson CBE is a Fellow of Cullinan Studio, which he joined in 1979.  He is Convenor of the Edge, the multi-disciplinary think-tank for the built and natural environment and chairs the Cambridgeshire Quality Panel. He is a member of the NHBC Foundation Expert Panel and is an Hon. Prof. at the University of Nottingham. He is an Honorary Fellow of IStructE and CIBSE and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by UWE in 2022.

Previously he was a Vice-President of the RIBA (1992-94), Chairman of the Construction Industry Council (1998-2000), a founder member of the Movement for Innovation Board (1998-2001), a CABE Commissioner (2002-10) and a Non-Executive Director of the NHBC (2007-14)

David joined Argent in 1990, he was appointed Joint Chief Executive in 2006 and Managing Partner of the new Argent LLP in 2012 and became Senior Partner in 2019. He is now Chairman of the Related Argent Partnership.

David is currently a Trustee of the UKGBC and of the Landaid Charity and Chairman of the Governance Board of the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard. He also sits on the Advisory Boards of Construct Zero and Standard Gas Technologies Ltd.

David read architecture at Cambridge and is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and has served on a number of RIBA practice committees.

Ted Pilbeam

Building Services & Sustainability Director - VolkerFitzpatrick

Ted is a building services engineer with over 30 years’ experience on a wide variety of building services installations, both in the UK and overseas. He is a Fellow of CIBSE and chair of the Knowledge Management Committee an active member of the Training and Development Panel and became a CIBSE board member and trustee this year.

A previous CIBSE Building Performance Award winner in 2015 and 2016, Ted has worked on numerous projects, embracing small domestic refurbishment projects to large multi-million-pound installations that include complex, safety-critical hospital systems. In 2007 he designed VolkerFitzpatrick’s new headquarters building, doubling the size of the office whilst cutting energy consumption by almost 70%, making it the first “Planet Positive” office building in the UK. In 2015 he was responsible for successful delivery of the New Stratford Campus Library which won the CIBSE Building Performance Award 2015 – New Build Project of the Year (up to £ 10m).

Group Energy Manager (Renewables & LZC) - Tesco

Rob has over 25 years experience in the Building Services Engineering profession and has held numerous roles as a consultant and as an end user, delivering projects both in the UK and Internationally. In his current role at Tesco, responsible for on-site renewable energy, international energy and property carbon reporting, Rob draws on many past projects to support the delivery of Tesco’s net-zero challenge and continual improvements.

Rob is passionate about leaving the world a little better  and is actively involved in the development of young people and champions STEM activities in schools.

Rob is also Chair of the CIBSE Technology Committee.

Jon Saltmarsh

Chief Technology Officer - Energy Systems Catapult

Jon Saltmarsh is Chief Technology Officer at the Energy Systems Catapult. The Catapult was established to accelerate the transition to a net zero energy system and to help UK businesses innovate and capture the opportunities for growth that net zero presents. He is responsible for identifying the key innovation needs and technical strategy for the Catapult to have most impact, including in decarbonisation of homes, sites and local areas; future energy networks; and digitalisation of the energy system.

Prior to joining the Catapult in January 2023, Jon had over 30 years’ experience in the public and private energy and defence sectors, identifying and exploiting opportunities for new technologies to deliver transformative change. This included initiating the government’s innovation programme on hydrogen for heating. More recently, as a Senior Civil Servant he was responsible for providing technical, engineering and research based evidence and advice to all policy teams delivering the net zero energy system.

Isabelle Smith

Global Director - AtkinsRealis

Isabelle Smith, co-founder of Decarbonomics™ Buildings & Decarbonomics™ Industrial, currently serves as the Global Director for Engineering Net Zero at AtkinsRéalis. In this strategic role, she focuses on the development and scaling of climate-resilient and net-zero carbon services across AtkinsRéalis’ global markets.

With a foundation in architecture and building services engineering, Isabelle has successfully led various teams, including the Net Zero Building Design Team for the UK and Europe. Her leadership has been instrumental in delivering sustainable infrastructure globally. She has worked in diverse locations such as the UAE and the UK and is presently based in Canada.

Isabelle is passionate about improving industry standards and policies around decarbonizing the built environment.

Milena Stojkovic

Associate Partner - Foster+Partners

Dr Milena Stojkovic, FCIBSE RIBA is an architect and sustainability engineer. As an Associate Partner at Foster+Parnters she has led teams on engineering projects across the UK, North America, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East. Notably, she was responsible for delivering environmental design and sustainability strategies for Apple global flagships and Techo International Airport in Phnom Penh. Recently, she has returned to architecture, where she has been pivotal in designing multiple tower projects in New York City.

Milena co-chairs the CIBSE’s Health & Wellbeing Working Group and sits on the Knowledge Generation Panel. She is a tutor at Bartlett (UCL) MSc Environmental Design and Engineering, MEng Engineering & Architectural Design and BSc Architecture programmes. She has contributed to industry sustainability guidance, most recently for International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Low Energy Transformation Initiative (LETI). Milena is a frequent speaker at international conferences on Whole Life Net Zero Carbon design, Building Refurbishment and Health and Wellbeing.

Lynne Sullivan

Architect, Chair - Good Homes Alliance; National Retrofit Hub

Lynne Sullivan is an Architect, now a design consultant and Visiting Professor, and is a Design Advisor for RIBA Competitions, the Design Council, and for local and national Design Commissions and Review Panels.  She chaired RIBA’s Sustainable Futures Committee 2014-2017 and was RIBA Climate Change Ambassador for COP21 Paris; she is a Board member of several key industry organisations, as well as authoring and chairing research projects and policy advice on the sustainable built environment.  Lynne leads the Buildings Mission 2030 Taskgroup for CLC’s Green Construction Board, Chairs the Jersey Architecture Commission, the Good Homes Alliance and is co-founder and Chair of the 2023 National Retrofit Hub.

Principal - Twinn Sustainability Innovation

Chris Twinn set up his own specialist practice 10 years ago after 28 years at Arup, latterly as Arup Fellow and director. He delivered his first zero carbon development more than 25 years ago and brings a wealth of experience in practical design, construction, and policy, from years working around the world. Chris is an EDGE think-tank core member, LETI member, Sustainable Development Foundation board member, Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard Governance Board member, Honorary Fellow of the RIBA, a CIBSE Fellow and on CIBSE publication and special interest groups.

Fabrizio is an architect with research experience in low-carbon materials and design. At RICS he produces thought leadership on building sustainability and shapes RICS's position on related policy matters. He also contributes to the development of the Built Environment Carbon Database and the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard.

Ed Wealand has been working in sustainability for over 15 years, both internationally as a chartered engineer as well as a sustainability consultant. In his current role as Chief Innovation Officer, Ed is responsible for shaping Longevity Partners’ approach to innovation and leading diverse global teams on high-impact sustainability projects.

Ed’s work focuses on making buildings and client investments more sustainable, concentrating on net zero strategies, energy efficiency, and enhancing health and air quality. Not only is he passionate about sustainability, but he also particularly enjoys finding practical, cost-effective solutions that blend the latest research with real-world application. Ed is also deeply involved in shaping policies and staying ahead of sustainability standards in the financial and real estate sectors.

Ed regularly connects with universities, research groups, and industry leaders to keep Longevity’s ideas fresh and influential. He is passionate about driving change in how we build and operate our spaces, aiming to make a meaningful impact on the environment and society.
