Winner: WARM: Low Energy Building Practice
WARM is a leading energy consultancy, offering everything from building services design, energy modelling, thermal bridge modelling, Passivhaus certification and training, to post-occupancy evaluation.
Founded in 2009 by father and daughter Peter Warm and Sally Godber, its ambition was to work only on true low energy and comfortable buildings and in 2010 WARM became the first Passivhaus certifier in the UK. All its engineers are certified Passivhaus designers and include both chartered engineers and architectural technologists.
It has been involved in landmark non-domestic Passivhaus projects in the UK and many large-scale residential developments. Projects include several Building Performance winners, among them Montgomery Primary School, Bushbury Hill Primary School, and the University of Leicester’s Centre for Medicine.
WARM wants to make this level of building performance and quality the standard practice in the UK. To achieve this change in culture and approach, a significant part of WARM’s work involves training other stakeholders as part of the Passivhaus Training programme.
The Passivhaus approach is not just about energy, but about delivering buildings that are comfortable, safe, healthy and very energy efficient. Occupant feedback highlights the positive health and wellbeing impacts that Passivhaus can bring to a project, and for WARM, this overall performance is at least as important as the energy aspects.
As Passivhaus buildings become more common, WARM’s focus is shifting to design techniques that support wider uptake of the approach and minimise additional costs.
Its team has an excellent understanding of building physics, allowing creative thinking, rather than just relying on what the software says. This is crucial, WARM says, as many of its projects are UK or international firsts.
Claire Newcombe, from Plymouth Community Homes, says: ‘Working with us from project infancy, WARM’s expert knowledge helped us develop a deliverable design. They were mindful of the constraints and challenges of the scheme and were on hand to support the site team through to completion of the development. They assisted with training for our in-house management and repairs teams, and continues to support us in monitoring efficiency of homes and resident comfort.’
