The Managing Editor receives enquiries and potential submissions from authors, assesses suitability for publication in BSER&T in liaison with the Editorial Board, identifies peer reviewers (with the aid of an extensive database), manages the peer review process, subsequent revisions, and final submission. The current Managing Editor spends a few hours every 2 or 3 days, which typically amounts to under 25 hours per month.
The Managing Editor works closely with the publishing team at SAGE as well as with the Chair of the Editorial Board and is responsible for ensuring that there is a rigorous process by allocating and monitoring the reviewers and establishing the schedule of content for the 6 issues per year (each typically with between 7 and 10 papers). The principal communications with reviewers and authors is automated through the SAGE online system and the Managing Editor ensures that the process is both timely and properly responsive so that the journal continues to meet the high standard valued by CIBSE members, authors and the international readership.
This activity attracts an honorarium (payment) and is principally undertaken online together with 2 or 3 virtual, and occasionally one physical, UK-based, meetings per year. The physical meeting is held alongside the Technical Symposium, which the managing editor is expected to attend.
