The Use of Heat Pumps in Hybrid Systems


The CPD explains how the decarbonisation process of the electricity grid in the UK has progressed in the last decade, with emphasis on the benefits of implementing heat pump technologies to reduce CO2 emissions.


It is focused on the operation principles (Switch & Partially parallel modes) offering details about what they are and what are the design considerations when implementing heat pumps in heating systems requiring higher flow temperatures.


Introduction to and application of Heat Pumps


Heat pumps have been successfully employed for many decades with the associated technology having been established for over 160 years.


Due to climate change and government directives, there is compelling reason that their use should be further extended, especially as the national grid is progressively decarbonised and refrigerants are further developed.


However, there are principles to be understood at the design stage that if not properly implemented will compromise the ability of the heat pump to make the desired contribution to carbon reduction, especially when installed on existing systems alongside boilers.


This presentation therefore reminds us of the basic principles governing the vapour compression cycle with its inherent limitations, discusses advantages (and otherwise) of commonly used refrigerants, and suggests schematics for new and existing systems, with or without the inclusion of domestic hot water preparation.
