WiBSE Steering Group Profiles

Laura Dunlop CEng MSc BEng (Hons) MCIBSE MIET
Chair (North West)

I started my career by being sponsored by Bovis Construction whilst undertaking my degree at Liverpool University and was put through their management development program. My work experience with them was based in London as they had no work in Manchester at the time. I also studied for my MSC with them. I worked as an M&E manager for Bovis for a couple of years post graduation in London, until I moved into design with Tilney Simmons and Partners. I then made the move back up North with Bovis to work on the Trafford Centre. I worked with them until the project was handed over and then moved back into design again in order to progress with my design experience and obtain my Chartered Engineer status. I have worked on a variety of different sizes and types of projects during my career, so have experience in most sectors.

I currently have management responsibilities for the electrical staff within the company across our two offices (Leeds and Manchester). We have a number of clients, both in the traditional client sector and in the contracting D&B side and are building our reputation as a good detailed design M&E consultancy. Our current projects are nationwide, so we are targeting opening an office in London, if we can manage to bring in the work that would support it in that area.

I am a hands on Director so undertake design and project work as well as management duties. I have also managed to set up the systems within the company to enable us to obtain our BSI ISO 9001 accreditation and Chas registration. Environmental management accreditation is still to come, hopefully soon.

Susie Diamond AMCIBSE MInstP

Susie is a Vice Chair of WiBSE and has over 12 years of Building Physics experience using dynamic thermal modelling software to simulate buildings and predict their thermal and energy performance in operation across the entire spectrum of building typologies and sizes. Susie was a judge for the 2013 CIBSE Building Performance Awards and was shortlisted for the 2013 UK Green Building Council's Rising Star  Award.

Susie studied physics at university, then spent several years working as an IT trainer and software developer before starting a position as Building Physics engineer at Fulcrum Consulting in 2000. She spent 9 years working for Fulcrum, and a further two for Mott MacDonald after they purchased Fulcrum in 2009. In 2011, she co-founded the building physics and environmental design consultancy, Inkling LLP.

Dr Claire Das Bhaumik PhD BEng (Hons) CEng MCIBSE

Claire has over 8 years of experience in building environmental modelling and has a PhD in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling. Claire's experience includes detailed modelling of building energy use, thermal performance, daylighting and ventilation performance. She has also developed software for building energy modelling and building regulations compliance.

Claire is a Partner at Inkling LLP and works closely with architects, engineers and contractors to ensure a low energy philosophy is maintained throughout design and build. In 2010, Claire was shortlisted for Professional/Consultant of the Year at the Women in Construction Awards.

Zara Metcalf

Without having either experience or qualifications, Zara gained her first role as an office junior at an industrial recruitment company. Adapting quickly to working life, her hard work and outgoing character soon saw her become an integral member of the team and successfully gain an NVQ in administration.
With many of Zara's friends setting off to university the time was right for a new challenge and her exploration of the world began. Starting in Spain she then went on to spend several years working and living in Thailand, the Philippines, and Kuwait, progressing in more and more advanced sales roles. In the middle of this Zara also returned to London working on the trading floors of Credit Suisse.

Returning to the UK in 2006, her initial desire was to persue opportunities again in a trading floor environment, however one of the agencies she was using had other ideas - they wanted to employ Zara direct as a recruitment consultant. Open to change and challenge she duly ventured into the world of recruitment and quickly found this was her calling. Truly engaged (and being new in town) she threw herself into her new role, the ability to use sales and negotation skills in a way that genuinely impacted people's lives gave her immense satisfaction and she quickly became recognised and a trusted name in her field.

In London late 2012, Zara accepted a position where a new opportunity offered her yet another experience - to establish a new desk focusing on M&E Engineers for a specialist construction agency in Twickenham. This was her biggest challenge to date. Trying to establish herself and her company in what was a very male orientated market and it was met with scepticism, even sarcasm, and a great deal of determination and resilience was required. Zara set about becoming an industry expert gleaning information from any source possible, and then she used this insight and awareness to establish herself as a trusted and knowledgeable contact in the candidate community.

in 2015 Zara joined JAM recruitment as a Client Services Director. With a new and well regarded MD in place and with vision to develop a new team within the construction industry, she moved her life and career to the North West (based in Manchester) to fulfil this role.
Her passion for the future are far reaching - she wants to influence how recruitment is perceived in the market and the relationship clients can expect from agencies. She wants to impact the number of women working within the construction sector and the way in which they are received.

Away from recruitment Zara's passion is to enjoy life with hobbies including; travel, dining out (and eating in), music events and festivals, and buying shoes....she has an uncontrollable passion for shoes!
