Lessons learnt from Piloting BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment

This paper gives an overview of the aims and objectives of BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment currently under development and some of the projects that were assessed using the 2010 pilot version of the scheme. It highlights some of the lessons learnt fromboth BRE and the organisations that piloted the scheme. It will give an overview of what as delivered by the pilots and some of the challenges such as implementing flood mitigation strategies and improving accessibility in existing homes. It also looks at the challenges of how to assess energy performance and the environmental impact of materials in refurbishment. A summary of the approach followed and the lessons learnt are given in this paper with a specific focus on the surface water runoff, health and wellbeing, energy and materials categories.
