The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) Building Performance Awards are open for entry to any organisation, both within the UK and internationally, that is responsible for the design, commissioning, construction, installation and operation of buildings and the manufacturers whose products enable efficient energy consumption. Entries are being sought from organisations whose projects, products, innovations, or initiatives are leading the way in building performance.
Dr Hywel Davies
CIBSE Technical Director and Chair of Judges (Host)
Hywel is Technical Director of CIBSE, the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers, a role he has held since June 2007. He leads the technical and policy development work of the Institution, particularly focused on those policy areas that influence the performance of buildings, including Building and Energy related Regulations and Building Information Modelling. He participates in a range of government and industry policy development groups. CIBSE members are familiar with his monthly contribution on legal issues for the CIBSE Journal. He is also engaged in research projects on technical and policy issues, particularly energy efficiency, BIM and other regulatory matters.
Director, bere:architects (Judge 2017-18)
One of the UK’s foremost Passive House practitioners, Justin Bere has over 20 years’ experience as an architect and is a leader in the adoption of the Passive House standard in the UK, and a passionate advocate of ecological and environmental design. His practice bere:architects completed the UK’s first certified PH non‐domestic retrofit, and also completed the UK’s first CSH level 6 zero carbon domestic PH as part of a research project in south Wales in 2010 for the Building Research Establishment (BRE) in Wales. In the same year bere:architects completed London’s first PH, The Camden Passive House. Bere:architects has won numerous design and sustainability awards, and in 2014 Justin published his first book ‘an Introduction to Passive House’ which became an RIBA ‘Best Seller’.
Senior Engineering Design Manager - Property, Sainsbury's Supermarkets (Judge 2017-18, and Lighting for Building Performance Award winner in 2015)
Mark Hawker is Senior Engineering Design Manager - Property for Sainsbury’s. He is responsible for engineering design of new stores, distribution centres and offices plus the introduction of new technology into the estate.
Sainsbury’s have reduced its electrical consumption by 29% in kwhrs/m2 over the last six years through its market leading Graphite Programme - saving 700 kT CO2e per year by rolling out natural refrigerants, low energy technology such as LED lighting and large scale use of renewable energy systems (PV, Biomass, GSHP, CHP).
Prior to this he worked as Technical Director for Carlsberg UK and in various senior engineering roles for Diageo. He has spent most of his career reducing the environmental impact of the organisations he has worked in. He is a chartered engineer and environmentalist and a fellow both of CIBSE and IMechE. Sainsburys were also the Lighting for Building Performance Award winner in 2015.
Chief Engineer, MTC Limited (Judge 2016-18)
Susan is a chartered engineer and a Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers and sits on the board.
She joined the MTC in January 2017 from Laing O’Rourke (LOR) where she was the sustainability engineering leader working within the Engineering Excellence group.
Susan has been an engineer for more than 30 years, beginning her career with Crown house Technologies Ltd, a subsidiary of Tarmac, Carillion and LOR.
Susan’s academic achievement includes a master’s degree in Sustainability and Building Energy Design, and a BEng Honours degree in Building Service engineering. She is a qualified BREEAM assessor, Accredited Professional (AP), Low Carbon Consultant (LCC) and a qualified ESOS auditor.
