Initial Professional Development Schemes

CIBSE's Initial Professional Development (IPD) is an approved in-house training scheme that supports engineers in developing the skills and competencies required for Engineering Council registration and corporate membership of CIBSE.

We've recently renamed our scheme to align with Engineering Council terminology and clarify the structured pathway to Professional Registration.

Engineers registered on an approved IPD programme are paired with an experienced mentor at their organisation who provides guidance as they develop their competence for Engineering Council registration.

What are the benefits of an approved IPD scheme?

  • Attract top graduate talent, as candidates increasingly look for employers who support their professional development
  • Provide a streamlined and structured route for employees to gain Professional Registration and grow into senior engineers and future leaders
  • Demonstrate your commitment to employee development and long-term career progression
  • Gain the assurance that your training scheme has been reviewed and approved by a globally respected Professional Engineering Institution
  • Use the Certificate of Approval and the CIBSE-approved scheme logo in promotional materials and scheme documentation
  • Benefit from a structured support system designed to help you develop the competence needed to achieve Professional Registration
  • Be paired with an experienced mentor who will guide you through your development journey
  • Gain the assurance you are working for a company committed to investing in staff development
  • Join CIBSE’s Young Engineers Network (YEN) and network with like-minded peers
  • Receive additional support from CIBSE when applying for Professional Registration
