HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, 1921 - 2021
Posted: 09 April 2021
The Society of Light and Lighting (SLL) was saddened to hear the death of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Ediburgh on Friday 9th April 2021.
The Duke of Edinburgh was awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Illuminating Engineering Society (precursor to the SLL) in 1959. Following his initial acceptance, Prince Philip was presented with his Honorary Fellowship on 11th April 1961, at the same time as the launch of the 1961 IES Code for Lighting.
The award was presented by then President, W S Stiles FRS OBE, who also presented HRH Prince Philip with a special, leather bound edition of the Code.
As referenced in Reflections on the Last 100 Years of Lighting in Great Britain, published in 2009 to mark the Society’s centenary, there was a short power cut during the awards ceremony, as W E Harper was about to deliver a presentation. However, to the amusement of all, including HRH Prince Philip, W E Harper came prepared with his own torch and carried on as normal until the power was supplied.
HRH Prince Philip has also been an Honorary Fellow of CIBSE since 1978, and the current CIBSE President, Stuart MacPherson has commented on behalf of the Institution.
The Society are extremely grateful for the long-standing support of HRH Prince Philip for the last 60 years and, along with CIBSE the SLL sends its condolences to all the members of the Royal Family.
