The Society of Façade Engineering (SFE), has been instrumental in addressing building safety issues by advising on professional indemnity insurance and contributing to the Government's Building Safety Fund. This ensures that SFE members are recognised as qualified professionals in recladding projects for higher-risk buildings.
The Society of Façade Engineering (SFE), as a leading industry body administered by CIBSE, has been actively working to raise the standard of the façade engineering profession and position itself as the go-to source for competence and knowledge. One key initiative has been the SFE’s involvement in addressing building safety concerns, particularly through its role in the Building Safety Fund and professional indemnity (PI) insurance developments.
For the past two years, the SFE has had a representative on the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) panel, advising both the Government and the insurance industry on overcoming challenges in the PI insurance market. This advisory role has been essential in enabling façade engineers and other professionals to carry out critical design and construction work on higher-risk buildings (HRBs) requiring recladding and safety improvements.
A significant outcome of these efforts has been the inclusion of the SFE in the International Underwriters Association (IUA) clause for PI policies. This recognition ensures that SFE members are acknowledged as capable professionals who can contribute to projects funded by the Government’s Building Safety Fund. This important work supports the removal of flammable materials from HRBs, making these buildings safe for tenants and leaseholders.
Through these initiatives, the SFE continues to solidify its reputation as the authoritative voice in façade engineering, helping to drive safety and professionalism within the industry.
