Beyond Technical Competence: How Professional Membership Shapes an Engineering Career

When we begin our careers as engineers, our focus is naturally technical. We learn how systems work, how to calculate, coordinate and design and how to translate codes, standards and engineering principles into solutions that perform safely and effectively.

As our careers progress, however, the definition of engineering competence becomes much broader.

For me, this evolution has been closely connected with my journey through CIBSE from developing as a building services engineer, through professional registration as a Chartered Engineer and ultimately becoming a Fellow, to taking a more active role in supporting membership and professional activities within the region.

Engineering Beyond the Individual Discipline

I started my career firmly within building services engineering. Like many engineers, my early professional development was centred on strengthening technical knowledge and learning how individual systems interact within increasingly complex buildings.

But buildings do not operate as collections of independent disciplines.

Architecture, structure, mechanical and electrical systems, vertical transportation, façade performance, sustainability, fire and life safety, controls and digital technologies increasingly need to function as one integrated system.

This becomes particularly evident when working on large-scale, mixed-use, hospitality and high-rise developments, where engineering decisions made within one discipline can have significant consequences elsewhere.

The engineer's role therefore evolves.

Technical competence remains fundamental, but increasingly we are required to understand interfaces, challenge assumptions, manage risk, communicate technical issues to nontechnical stakeholders and make decisions based on the overall performance of the building rather than the interests of an individual discipline.

Today, with the increasing emphasis on intelligent buildings, decarbonisation, digitalisation and performance-based design, this integration is becoming even more important.

Professional Registration as More Than a Qualification

This is one of the reasons I believe professional membership and registration should not simply be viewed as another qualification or a collection of letters after one's name.

The process encourages engineers to examine their development more broadly.

Becoming professionally registered requires us to demonstrate not only what we know technically, but how we apply that knowledge responsibly; how we communicate; how we manage engineering decisions and risk; how we develop others and how we contribute to the profession.

In my own career, CIBSE provided a professional framework that complemented the experience gained through projects.

Achieving Chartered Engineer status represented an important milestone, but becoming a Fellow carried a different meaning. Fellowship reflects not only individual technical competence but also experience, leadership and contribution to the wider profession.

That distinction becomes increasingly important as our careers mature.

From Technical Leadership to Wider Project Leadership

My own career has gradually moved from predominantly building services and MEP-focused responsibilities into technical management and, subsequently, broader multidisciplinary project leadership.

At first glance, moving from engineering into project leadership may appear to mean moving away from technical work. My experience has been quite the opposite.

The larger and more complex the project, the more important it becomes for those leading it to understand the technical consequences of decisions.

A programme decision can create a design risk. A commercial decision can affect system performance. A seemingly simple architectural change can create implications across structure, MEP, fire strategy, façade, authorities and construction methodology.

Engineering knowledge therefore remains highly relevant even when the responsibility becomes broader.

The difference is that experience gradually teaches us to move between levels, from understanding a detailed technical issue to recognising its effect on the overall project and communicating that effect clearly enough for the right decision to be made.

I believe this ability to connect technical depth with wider project understanding is increasingly important for the next generation of building services professionals.

The Value of Professional Community

Another important part of my CIBSE journey has been involvement beyond my day-to-day employment.

Participating in CIBSE activities, membership initiatives, the Intelligent Buildings Group (IBG) and Women in Building Services Engineering (WiBSE) has provided valuable opportunities to connect with engineers at different stages of their careers, exchange knowledge and perspectives and contribute to the wider building services community.

These interactions are valuable because professional development does not happen only through formal training.

We learn through projects, mistakes, difficult decisions, technical debates, mentors, colleagues and increasingly by helping others develop.

Supporting engineers considering professional registration has reinforced this for me. Many experienced engineers already demonstrate much of the competence required for professional membership but hesitate to apply because they believe they need another project, another qualification or another few years of experience.

Often, what they actually need is to reflect on the experience they already have and learn how to articulate it against the professional competence framework.

A Message to Engineers Considering Membership

My advice is therefore simple: do not wait for the perfect point in your career to begin your professional membership journey.

Start by understanding the requirements. Review your experience against the competence criteria. Identify the areas that are already strong and those that need further development. Speak to professionally registered colleagues and CIBSE members and seek mentorship where needed.

Most importantly, treat professional registration as part of your development rather than as an administrative exercise at the end of it.

The process itself can help identify where you want your career to go next.

For younger engineers, this may mean establishing the foundations for Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status. For experienced professionals, it may mean recognising that their contribution has developed beyond technical delivery into leadership, mentoring and influence across the profession.

Looking Forward

Building services engineering is changing rapidly.

The transition towards lower-carbon buildings, smarter systems, data-driven operation and increasingly integrated design will require engineers who are technically capable but also able to collaborate across traditional professional boundaries.

Professional institutions such as CIBSE have an important role in supporting that evolution through technical knowledge, professional standards and perhaps most importantly the community of engineers who contribute their experience back to the profession.

My own involvement with CIBSE has evolved alongside my career, and I increasingly see professional membership not as a destination, but as a continuing relationship with the profession.

We develop our competence through the projects we deliver. We broaden it through the people and disciplines we work with. And ultimately, we strengthen the profession when we share that experience and help the next generation progress.

That for me, is where the real value of professional membership lies.
