Project of the Year - Residential

Interested in sponsoring this category?

This Award recognises and celebrates the new build of a Residential building that most effectively demonstrates high levels of user satisfaction and comfort while delivering outstanding measured building performance. Creating this type of exemplar building is demanding and the BPA recognise the work and dedication of the team. Examples of buildings suitable for this category include, but are not limited to: residential developments and refurbishment projects.

Who should enter

Clients, architects, contractors, building services engineers, quantity surveyors, consultants, property owners, land/estate owners, building occupiers, project managers, mechanical and electrical engineers.

  • Entries in this category must be from within the United Kingdom (see Project of the Year - International for projects outside the UK).
  • Projects must have been completed during the period 1 June 2017 to 31 August 2019.
  • Entries must be for new build projects only. Retrofit projects should be entered into the Retrofit category.
  • Entries may be submitted by any or all members (together) of the project team and should be accompanied by a full year of operational data.

Judging criteria

Successful entries will give details of as many of the following elements of the project as possible:

Synopsis of the project setting out the client’s brief, building performance objectives, materials and method of construction, and any significant challenges or constraints e.g. planning, budget, programme.

What measures have been used to assist in achieving the building’s intended performance

How have you collected user feedback, what have you learnt from it and what impact has it had on the operation and performance of the building?

The energy and carbon strategy for the project, including the operational energy use (electric and thermal in kWh) and the building benchmark selected.

The whole life costing and performance of the building.

Health and wellbeing has been considered in your project and how excellent indoor environmental conditions have been provided.

How was the project reviewed against the impacts of future climate change

Any significant innovations or distinctive features of your project. This can include elements related to biodiversity, water, construction, resource use, supply chain and corporate social responsibility.

The Building Performance Awards seek to recognise outstanding, measured performance. Entries which include clear evidence of a full year of actual measured energy data and performance of the building in use are strongly preferred by the judges.

Winning entries provide clear evidence of how the building really performs in use. Ideally this will include a Display Energy Certificate, ESOS report or an entry into the CarbonBuzz database, but other clear evidence of actual performance is accepted. Where a building is expected to have a DEC by law, then we would expect to receive an up to date DEC as part of the entry package.
