The Board is the Institution’s governing body. It comprises seven Officers:
- President
- President Elect
- Three Vice Presidents
- Honorary Treasurer
- Immediate Past President
Alongside these Officers, there are Elected Members – the positions for which nominations are usually open. The number of vacancies may vary depending on existing terms.
- Board positions are appointed by the existing Board who take recommendations from the Nominations Panel.
- Positions may be subject to an election if nominations exceed available vacancies.
For 2027, nominations are invited for two elected member vacancies.
As a member of the Board or Council, you’ll have the opportunity to:
- Influence the profession: Play a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of CIBSE and the wider industry.
- Drive change: Lead initiatives tackling today’s key challenges facing the profession, including sustainability, innovation, and professional development.
- Expand your network: Collaborate with a diverse group of professionals, academics, and industry leaders who are passionate about building services engineering and the built environment.
- Enhance your leadership skills: Gain valuable experience in governance, strategy, and leadership that can enhance your career.
The Nominations Panel will assess applications against clear scoring criteria. Please ensure your application provides evidence of the following:
- CIBSE/Industry Experience and Awareness of Building Services Engineering Issues: Demonstrates an understanding of local, national and global building services engineering challenges and recognises how the Institution can lead or contribute to positive change.
- Commitment to the Institution: Demonstrates a strong commitment to the Institution and the ability to promote it positively and constructively. Able to commit the critical time required for the role.
- Knowledge of the Institution's Objectives and Activities: Possess an understanding of the Institution's objectives, its range of activities, the role of the Board and the key internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience Working in Teams: Teamwork and Role Understanding: Ability to work effectively as part of a team, with an understanding of one's role within the team.
- Listening Skills and Constructive Challenge: Demonstrates good listening skills and the ability to challenge ideas constructively.
- EDI (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) Awareness and Practice: Demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to EDI principles and practices, ensuring they contribute to a culture of inclusion within the Institution.
- Strategic Thinking and Policy Development: Ability to think strategically with an understanding of the development and implementation of policies, governance, and the implications of these decisions on the Institution's resources.
Trustees are required to be Corporate Members or Members of Council.
The President Elect, Honorary Treasurer and Vice President roles have further criteria specific to the roles. These are detailed here.
The Council is a much larger consultative body that advises the Board on Institution policy. It represents the breadth of CIBSE’s networks, with members drawn from Regions, Societies, Groups, Standing Committees and several elected member positions.

- Bring diverse perspectives: We encourage applications from underrepresented groups, to ensure a broad range of voices are heard.
