Luca Roncoroni was appointed Creative Director of the Icehotel Group in January 2019, this incorporates the world-famous hotel and art exhibition in Sweden, as well as the Icehotel Creative Experience, with ice design projects around the world.

The Icehotel began as an art exhibition using ice and snow from the Torne River and surrounding area in the small village of Jukkasjӓrvi, Sweden. Since then, the Icehotel has returned in a different guise each year. One of the objectives behind the Icehotel is to explore art by introducing creative individuals to ice and snow.

Each year, the Icehotel Creative Board makes an open call for design proposals. The best concepts are then chosen and brought to life during a two-week Art Symposium, taking place in the Spring. Out of 120-150 proposals, 15-20 are accepted, with the applicants invited to Jukkasjӓrvi, Sweden in November to build their design. Diversity plays an important role in the selection process and the Board are keen to have a balanced representation of gender, ethnicity, age and experience.

Ice is harvested from the Torne River and makes up the main construction material for the floors, walls and ceilings. Inside the hotel there is a stable temperature of between -4.0 to -5.0C but, outside it can be as cold as -40.0C.

During this webinar, the SLL will be talking to Luca about his role as Creative Director and what this entails, from artistic conception, design and construction to working with a diverse range of specialists including architects, lighting designers, engineers and artists from around the world.

Luca is an architect with experience in interior and furniture design. He first worked for Icehotel in 2001 and has returned each year. He has worked as an artist, designing the hotel suites, as well as taking part in international design projects on behalf of Icehotel, including an iceberg catwalk for Chanel and theme designs for Icebar by Icehotel around the world. Alongside his work with Icehotel, Luca runs his own Oslo based studio, where he has worked with Anish Kapoor Studio, Innovation Norway and the University of Bergen, to explore the boundaries of architecture, design and installation art.
