2017 ANZ Young Engineers Award winners revealed

This year marked the start of a region-wide Award scheme for the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers Australia and New Zealand region. Thai Nguyen, a Mechanical Engineering (Hons) Student from UNSW and Simon Green, a graduate Building Services Engineer from Arup have taken top prizes for the CIBSE ANZ Young Engineers Awards.

Thai was announced Mark Griffin Memorial Award – Student of the Year, having completed an outstanding brief for a sustainable retrofit of an old office building. The Awards called on entries from Engineering students from 17 Universities around the region; open to anyone studying BSc, BEng or MEng in Australia and New Zealand.

The judges felt Thai’s entry was impressive. Lindy Stephens, CIBSE ANZ Secretary and Mechanical Engineers at Arup commented, “The brief has been clearly understood and overall responses were well thought-out and realistic.”
Finalist George Fitzpatrick a student of Civil Engineering and Architectural Design at Monash University was also recognised on the night for his high quality submission to the student competition.

The Jack Pirie Inspiring Excellence Award - Young Engineer of the Year saw a record number of entries for 2017. Judges were impressed with the quality of nominations but felt Simon’s entry demonstrated the largest contribution to building services in his short career.

Sian Willmott, Chair of CIBSE Vic Young Engineer Network and judging panellist commented “He went beyond his day to day job to learn about interdisciplinary design and consequently make improved project decisions.”

Young Engineer finalist Nicola Viselli, a sustainability consultant at Northrop in Sydney also took to the stage to receive a trophy and certificate for her commendable nomination and contribution to building services.

The Award ceremony took place as part of the CIBSE 30th Anniversary Cocktail Function, 15 June 2017, at Melbourne’s Sealife Aquarium, in front of over 110 guests including dignitaries from other institutions, commercial and educational leaders and CIBSE President, Peter Y Wong who flew in from Hong Kong for the occasion.

All finalists took home a certificate and a trophy with the winners awarded a $1000 prize, all courtesy of Award sponsor’s Beca.

The Awards programme is part of CIBSE ANZ’s strategy to identify the brightest young engineering minds and direct their skills towards solving some of the industry's greatest challenges. The 2018 competition will re-open for entries in November 2017.
