Bringing people together, CIBSE celebrates significant contributions to industry

Recognising outstanding service to the work of the Institution, CIBSE announced the 2020 and 2021 recipients of its Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals at the Annual President's Dinner, which took place at the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) in London on Friday 11 February 2022.

Unable to meet for the previous two years, CIBSE was delighted to be able to bring people together in celebration of the 2020 and 2021 medallist's significant contribution, working to deliver the Institutions’ objectives of serving society and benefitting the public.

A bumper year for the awards, the President’s Dinner was hosted by CIBSE President, Professor Kevin Kelly. It was also a first for CIBSE CEO, Ruth Carter who welcomed guests alongside immediate past-president, Stuart MacPherson. 

Gold medallists Phil Jones and Mike Simpson were both recognised for their significant contribution to CIBSE guidance, with a focus on energy efficiency, heat networks and lighting.

CIBSE Technical Director, Dr Hywel Davies acknowledged Bryan Franklin’s role in leading the establishment of a CIBSE certification scheme and in establishing CIBSE Certification Ltd, responding to challenges presented when the Energy Performance of Buildings Regulations came into force in 2007.

David Wood served as an almoner for over a decade, along with chairing the CIBSE Benevolent Fund. David's citation was delivered by Olu Babalola MCIBSE, former chair of the CIBSE Home Counties North West region.

Alongside the four of the other gold medallists this year, David Hughes become CIBSE president in 2006, during which time he took responsibility for international coordination and development.

The first of two lighting specialists to receive a Gold medal was Past CIBSE and Society of Light and Lighting (SLL) President, Stephen Lisk FCIBSE FSLL. 
During his presidential year, Stephen set out to lead the various disciplines represented within building services engineering towards a more collaborative approach. 

The final Gold Medal was awarded to Mike Simpson CEng FCIBSE FSLL, another past president of CIBSE and the SLL. Delivered by CIBSE President, Kevin Kelly, Mike's citation touches upon some of the prominent lighting projects that he has led in his role with Signify, including work on the London 2012 Olympics, along with acknowledging his ongoing contribution to the writing and development of technical standards for lighting internationally.

Along with the six Gold Medallists, there were five recipients of the CIBSE Silver Medal for 2020 and 2021, including Isaac Coker. Isaac travelled from the UAE for the awards, accompanied by his wife, Matilda and Farah Naz, Chair of the CIBSE UAE region.

Chair of the CIBSE Member and Registration Panel, Tony Lamberti was recognised for his contribution to the CIBSE Membership development, along with fellow CIBSE Professional Review Interviewer, John Forster and Andrew Rowe, who served on the CIBSE Continuing Professional Development Panel for over 15 years before becoming vice-chair and later, chair of the CIBSE Education and Membership Committee. Dr Rodger Edwards was recognised for his significant contribution to CIBSE guidance on domestic ventilation.
