Memorial lecture to celebrate lighting legend Jonathan Speirs

Jonathan Speirs (1958–2012) is widely acknowledged by architects, lighting designers, building services engineers and many others as one of the world’s finest lighting designers.

To celebrate his vision and passion for lighting, the inaugural Jonathan Speirs Memorial Lecture, entitled ‘Light + Dark = Architecture,’ will be given by his long term creative partner, Mark Major, fellow founder of Speirs + Major.

Mark will describe their shared passion and interest in the relationship between light, dark and architecture and the shared philosophy behind some of Speirs + Major’s early work. He will conclude with an account of the projects carried out since Jonathan’s retirement from Speirs + Major, which they co-founded, demonstrating the continued quality, innovation and passion delivered by the practice.

The theme of the lecture will be ‘Light + Dark = Architecture’

In recognition of Jonathan Speirs’ contribution to Lighting Design and the built environment, Glasgow City Council has most generously offered the use of the Satinwood Suite, situated in Glasgow City Chambers, for this lecture. The intention is for it to be an ongoing event, seeking to promote lighting design in Scotland, building on Jonathan’s considerable legacy.

During his career, Jonathan’s work received international acknowledgement and acclaim. In 2009, Jonathan was given Honorary Fellowship of the Society of Light and Lighting and gave the Society’s centenary lecture. He was also awarded the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2011 he was awarded Honorary Membership of the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) and Professional Lighting Designers Lifetime Achievement Award.

Jonathan’s work with the practice included the lighting of iconic landmarks such as The Gherkin in London, the Copenhagen Opera House, the Eden Project and the Burj al Arab, Dubai, amongst many breathtaking examples. Prior to Jonathan’s retirement, Speirs + Major also received three ‘Radiance Awards’, the highest honour given by the IALD.
