The South Bank of the Thames is one of the UK’s most important Public Realm Areas. The area has won numerous lighting awards for schemes. Certain vistas are used to define the vision of the UK and London internationally. and Before Covid the SLL had a lighting walk which encompassed this area looking at the designs of architectural and public realm. This walk will look at the designs which are still in situ and how they are faring and whether we feel that space still reflects the high standards of previous years.

This is a night walk from Waterloo to Tower Bridge (approx. 2 miles) and finishing at a hostelry adjacent to London Bridge. The walk will be led by Senior members of the CIBSE/SLL and will look at the lighting installations along the South bank of the Thames and the opposite north bank. The walk will take up to two hours from 18.00 to 20.00. The walk will include the following installations

  • I Max Cinema,
  • Leake Street.
  • Royal Festival Hall Plaza ,
  • Jubilee Gardens
  • The London Eye,
  • Royal festival Hall,
  • Shell Building,
  • Southbank Promenade (Queen’s walk),
  • The National Theatre
  • Thames Bridges Waterloo to Tower bridge,
  • OXO Tower and Coin Street ,
  • The Globe Theatre,
  • Tate Modern and the Millenium Bridge

  • London Assembly Building,
  • The City of London,
  • The Tower of London,
  • London Bridge Station,
  • Southwark Cathedral
  • The Shard,

  • Tate Modern.

It should be noted that some of these buildings are lit and others are not.

The leaders will ask the participants to discuss the projects and to discuss the merits of external lighting, architectural, public realm, dark skies, planning policies and the use of city masterplans.  The group will be asked to vote on the best installations and prepare a joint communique representing the feeling of the group which may form an article in Light Lines magazine.

The meeting place for the start of the walk will be the National Windrush Memorial which is at the North end of Waterloo concourse between the exit of the Underground station and entrance to Platforms 20-24.

David will also include some limited tuition (time dependent) on night time photography of lighting installations for both i-phone and digital cameras.

Please note that we will not be accepting any bookings later than 18.00 17th March so that we can manage the numbers and book tables at a Pub next to London Bridge Station.
