The Elizabeth Line opened in 2022, providing a brand-new deep level underground service through central London.

The story of its lighting began in 2009, when Equation Lighting were appointed as lead designer for the underground stations, alongside Grimshaw as line-wide architects. In an era of fluorescent lighting and restrictive railway standards, Equation had the vision to develop a design based not on the technology of the day, but the technology they foresaw would be in place when construction was in progress.

Their apparently simple design makes use of the reflective surfaces of the station platforms and concourses to provide a revolutionary yet elegant installation. This was recognised by the award of  the Stirling Prize for the project in 2024.

This event will tell the story of how the design was realised and the many challenges encountered along the way. Following the talk there will a Q&A chaired by Chris Williamson, incoming RIBA President. Then join us for networking drinks and light bites.

Please note that this is an in-person event only. Please do not register if you are unable to be in London for the event.
