Book Now‘Some like it hot’ – geothermal potential for the UK's energy transition title here
The Earth is hot, it’s been hot for 4.5 billion years and will remain hot for billions of years to come. Humans cannot cool the Earth, but we can exploit its heat sustainably with minimal carbon footprint and without needing exotic minerals and metals to provide heat and power consistently and continuously. Access to geothermal heat is not the preserve of nations with volcanoes or abundant hot springs. It is available to all nations on Earth and much more evenly distributed than coal, oil, or gas. There could never be an ’OPEC” equivalent for geothermal energy.
Other European nations with similar geology to the UK (France, Netherlands, Germany, and Hungary) have advanced their geothermal portfolios, yet the UK has been slow to develop its geothermal resource in part because we have had an abundance of fossil fuels. Times are a changin’ though and the demand for low grade heat in particular, free of greenhouse gas emissions, means that at last the country is beginning to embrace the idea that it is Geothermal Nation.
Speaker's name: Prof. Jon Gluyas
Speaker's biography: With 28 years of industrial experience and 15 years of academic experience. He has pioneered the use of geothermal energy in the UK, as well as working on CCS and the exploration for natural hydrogen and helium.
