This course is aimed at providing individuals with an overview of some elements contained in BS9251 specifically covering recommendations for water supplies, duration of operation, coverage, enhancements and power supplies. It should allow them to understand the recommendations of and enable them to follow and apply the guidance contained within the document.

  • Clause 5.10 and 5.11.4.2 hydraulic calculations method overview, reference to appendix B for supplementary information (to enable an inspector to understand and interpret information from a sprinkler designer, delegates are not expected to undertake full hydraulic calculations).

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the course delegates will be able to:

  1. Locate, understand and apply the recommendations for sprinkler specification contained in BS9251
  2. Locate understand and apply the recommendations for water supply duration and power supplies contained in BS9251
  3. Locate understand and apply the guidance covering calculations and positioning recommendations contained within BS9251
  4. Use the guidance contained within BS9251 to amend general recommendations in line with the guidance on enhancements in section 4
  5. Explain the use of table 2 in BS9991 to extend travel distances in situations covered in that document.

Delegates should be familiar with basic concepts of fire safety for example the triangle of fire and methods of fire spread, an understanding of the codes and guides issued by HM government is desirable however detailed knowledge of these documents is not considered essential.

Steve joined Kent Fire & Rescue Service in 1987 and served 28 years in numerous roles, operationally, in training, and fire safety. He was a former Assistant Divisional Officer and lectured in technical fire safety, command and control and fire-fighting operations.
He is a Chartered Member of IOSH and a Member of the Institute of Fire Engineers, and holds an NVQ Level 5 Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, NEBOSH General, and Construction Certificates
He is a registered CITB/NEBOSH tutor and teaches on NEBOSH General/Construction/Diploma courses, Site Managers Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) / Site Safety Supervisors Training Scheme (SSSTS) courses (Site Safety Plus).
Steve has a massive interest in history and has a Master’s Degree in Military History, War Media and Society from the University of Kent, with a post-graduate diploma in Management Studies from Christchurch University.

For delegates booking from outside the UK, VAT will not be charged for ‘Remote’ and ‘On-Demand’ courses, as well as online exams. VAT will only apply if you attend a course in person within the UK. Delegates residing outside of the UK, will need to complete a ‘Public Course Booking Form’.

Next Steps

Remote - How to join: 

This course will be conducted live online via Microsoft Teams. You do not need a Microsoft Teams account. After finalising your booking, you will receive a confirmation email containing a link to join the session. 

You can join using your preferred web browser. Alternatively, if you have the Microsoft Teams desktop app installed, simply click 'join meeting' in the email to connect directly through the app. 

Face-to-Face: 

The course location will be listed below the corresponding date and included in your booking confirmation email, sent after your booking is finalised. Please arrive at the location 15 minutes before the start time. 

Note that face-to-face courses are not available online, so your in-person attendance is required.  

Catering will be provided during the course. If you have any food allergies or intolerances, please inform us in advance by emailing [email protected] so we can make suitable arrangements. 

Please be aware that parking is not available at the venue. 

Course Materials: 

The course presentation and any additional materials will be provided to delegates on the day of the course, once attendance has been confirmed. You will receive links via email to download these materials via email. For those attending a remote course, the materials will also be shared through the Microsoft Teams chat.
