Course Content

Energy strategy reports are a requirement for planning permission in London and a number of other UK cities including Oxford, Reading and Brighton.  Writing a meaningful report involves making many decisions about what data you use and how you apply it.  Whilst using dynamic simulation is a valuable tool it can produce unrealistic results, ensuring you know what to expect before accepting the results is vital.  This practical course will review energy strategies and demonstrate how to prepare an energy strategy report.

Introduction to Energy Strategy reports
  • Why are they required?
  • Who writes them?
  • Who are they written for?
  • Identifying and understanding policy requirements
  • Methodologies
Assessing energy demands
  • Energy modelling
  • Sources of benchmark data
  • Regulated and unregulated energy uses
Energy saving measures ('Be Lean')
  • Building shape and orientation
  • Fabric specification
  • Building services
  • Lighting design
  • Calculating CO2savings from energy efficiency
Energy distribution ('Be Clean')
  • Assessing the suitability of district energy systems
  • Sizing CHP and CCHP systems
  • Connecting to existing schemes
  • Technical and financial issues
  • Calculating CO2savings from district energy systems

  • Overview of technologies (sizing, technical requirements, costs)
  • Combining technologies
  • Useful rules of thumb and sources that can be referenced
  • Calculating CO2savings from renewable energy generation
Preparing the report
  • Agreeing conclusions with the client
  • Report format and content
  • Links with Code for Sustainable Homes and BREEAM standards
  • Links with wider sustainable design and construction requirements
  • Links with other planning documents
