#SLLOurLight

The Society of Light and Lighting (SLL) invite you to celebrate the art and science of light at home with a brand-new social media initiative, uniting the lighting community in light and play.

#SLLOurLight is a social media initiative designed to provide an opportunity to celebrate light and lighting at home. The theme for the first edition is film and the SLL is inviting you to create a light scene inspired by your favourite movie, using what you have around the house. Share your creation to Instagram and/or Twitter, making sure to tag @SLL100 and include #SLLOurLight and #LightDay2021 when posting.

#SLLOurLight came as a response to the lack of face-to-face events, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Traditionally, the SLL would hold the annual Ready Steady Light competition every March but, this hasn’t been possible. Each year, Ready Steady Light sees teams of lighting professionals come together to design exterior light installations, using a limited selection of kit, in just an hour and a half. Missing the opportunity to get back to basics and play with light, the Society was keen to encourage an alternative for people to get involved with.

As all of us have been spending more time at home, we thought this could be a good way to have fun in those familiar surroundings, challenging people to be resourceful and creative with the resources they have to hand. Whether its your interpretation of the dystopian futuristic world of Bladerunner in a corner of your living room, or Eye of Sauron on your kitchen counter, we want to see your creations!

Inspired by the film Arachnophobia from Sonia Pepperell MSLL, SLL rep. for CIBSE West Midlands

With the original closeing date set for 28 May 2021, we thought we'd open it up until the end of June. Following which, the SLL will announce two winners. Inspired by the Ready Steady Light peer award, which is decided by the contestants taking part, the SLL will be recognising the post with the most likes, along with an image selected by a panel of SLL judges.

The Society would like to invite anyone and everyone to take part and get creative with the everyday items they have at hand. The aim is to have fun, to be safe and to celebrate the lighting community together online.
