Proposals for CIBSE Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals

CIBSE's gold, silver, and bronze Medals recognise exceptional, outstanding, and distinguished service to CIBSE and the wider industry.

Each year, CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) awards Medals to recognise and honour members who have made significant contributions to the field of building services engineering and the Institution. These awards celebrate professional service, dedication, leadership, innovation, and excellence, reflecting the Institution's mission to promote and support the engineering of sustainable, safe, and efficient buildings. Please note that only members of CIBSE can nominate and be nominated for medals.

Proposals for 2025 CIBSE Medals will open for six weeks starting in mid-February 2025.

Medal recipients will be announced at the President’s Awards Dinner, taking place in October every year. The CIBSE Medals are presented by the CIBSE President, Chief Executive and senior CIBSE representatives including Board and Council members.

If you wish to speak to someone about a proposal, please get in touch via email at [email protected].

Here are just some of the reasons to consider proposing a colleague

  1. Recognising excellence
The medals highlight individuals who have driven innovation, improved standards, or contributed to sustainability and building performance.
  2. Fostering community and leadership
By acknowledging these contributions, CIBSE fosters a sense of community and encourages leadership within the profession. Honouring members strengthens CIBSE’s core values of professional development, industry leadership, and collaboration.
  3. Promoting the profession
The recognition of individual achievements enhances the visibility of building services engineering as a vital field in addressing global challenges like climate change and energy efficiency.
  4. Encouraging participation
These awards inspire others to actively engage with CIBSE, whether through research, mentoring, or volunteer service, ensuring the continued growth and impact of the profession.

In essence, CIBSE medals are a symbol of excellence, dedication, and vision within the building services engineering community, serving as benchmarks for aspiring professionals and affirming the value of the Institution’s mission. By recognising members' dedication and accomplishments, CIBSE Medals play a crucial role in celebrating industry leaders, fostering innovation, and promoting a culture of professional excellence.

Eligibility for proposals

This is the member who is being nominated to receive a CIBSE Medal. This individual must be a CIBSE member (Affiliate, Licentiate, Associate, Member or Fellow) and have demonstrated distinguished or outstanding service to the Institution or made significant contributions to the building services engineering field.

This is a proposal submitted by a CIBSE Committee, typically for members who have made significant contributions to the profession or the Institution. These nominations are considered for one of the CIBSE Medals (Gold, Silver, or Bronze) and are evaluated based on the Candidate’s achievements and service. Committee nominations help ensure that members with exceptional impact, including those with years of dedicated involvement, are recognised for their contributions to building services engineering.

This is the member who nominates the Candidate. If you are part of the CIBSE Nominations Panel, you can't propose a member for a CIBSE Medal.

Medal Proposals FAQs

The CIBSE Medals (Gold, Silver, and Bronze) are prestigious awards recognising exceptional contributions by members to CIBSE and the building services engineering profession.

Yes, the Nominations Panel has agreed that it is appropriate to consider proposals for posthumous awards, provided they are made within two years of the death of the person proposed.

Please don’t worry. If you are not sure, just propose the medal which you think comes closest to the level of service. The Nominations Panel will take a judgement and may well recommend a different medal if that is more appropriate.

Yes, but a separate nomination form must be completed for each candidate nominated.

•    The candidate's details - this includes their contact details, membership information and present post.
•    A justification statement detailing the candidate's contributions and achievements.
•    Details of four endorsers who are also CIBSE members.

Nominations are reviewed by the CIBSE Nominations Panel, which assesses them against the criteria for the respective medal.

Recipients receive the medal corresponding to their award (Gold, Silver, or Bronze) and formal recognition of their contributions.

If a candidate has been nominated but is not selected for a CIBSE Medal, the nominator may consider resubmitting the nomination in subsequent years with additional supporting evidence.

Whilst we don’t wish to discourage this if it is what you want, we believe that four strong referees are sufficient.

Only current CIBSE members (some also posthumously) can be nominated for a medal. Nominees should have a history of outstanding contributions to CIBSE or the profession, aligned with the criteria for each medal. Members of the following grades can be nominated: Affiliate, Licentiate, Associate, Member and Fellow.

  • Gold Medal: For exceptional service, typically over 25 years, and achieving a position of eminence.
  • Silver Medal: For outstanding service, typically over 15 years.
  • Bronze Medal: For distinguished service, typically over 10 years.

You need to be an active member of CIBSE to nominate another member for a CIBSE Medal. However, if you are a member of the Nominations Panel, you won't be able to submit a CIBSE Medal proposal.

No, self-nominations are not permitted.

The CIBSE Nominations Panel considers the candidate’s:
•    Length and depth of service to CIBSE.
•    Leadership and influence within the profession.
•    Contributions to the Institution and the industry.
•    Personal qualities, such as integrity and vision.

The CIBSE Medals are typically awarded in October at the President’s Awards Dinner.

Yes, please. This is not a legal process, but we would ask if you could either declare potential conflicts of interest or avoid them by getting a colleague or a committee to submit a proposal instead of yourself.
