CIBSE Certification has been featured in a recent article by UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service), recognising its contributions to the built environment through accredited certification services.

As a wholly owned subsidiary of CIBSE, CIBSE Certification supports the advancement of building services engineering by providing trusted certification schemes. The company reinvests its surplus funds into expanding its services and supporting CIBSE’s charitable objectives, reinforcing its commitment to raising industry standards.

A journey of accreditation and growth

Since gaining its first UKAS accreditation in 2007 for personnel certification schemes, CIBSE Certification has continuously expanded its ISO-accredited services. It is now the only UKAS-accredited provider of both EPC and DEC energy assessor competency schemes in the UK.

Building on its expertise, CIBSE Certification extended its accreditation to cover ISO 50001 (Energy Management) in 2017, followed by ISO 9001 (Quality) in 2018, ISO 14001 (Environmental) in 2021, and ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety) in 2024. These services cater primarily to engineering, consulting, and property management organisations that prioritise technical expertise.

The value of UKAS accreditation

Kieran O’Brien, Director of CIBSE Certification, emphasised the importance of UKAS accreditation in growing the organisation’s potential marketplace:

Although UKAS accreditation is technically voluntary for our services, it is highly valued across the built environment and often a minimum requirement in tenders. It provides assurance that our technical competence and impartiality have been rigorously assessed, making us a trusted certification body.

The accreditation process has also helped CIBSE Certification refine its procedures, improve efficiencies, and embed best practices, ensuring high-quality service delivery with minimal business disruption.

A reputation for excellence

UKAS accreditation has been instrumental in enhancing CIBSE Certification’s reputation and securing new opportunities, including its appointment as the UK administrator of NABERS, the Australian building efficiency rating system.

CIBSE Certification’s commitment to excellence continues to support the industry’s transition to safer, net-zero and better-performing buildings.
