UK-SPEC Higher-Risk Buildings Standard

News
01 Jan 20

The UK Engineering Council has launched a new standard for Professional Engineering Competence and Commitment Contextualised for Higher-Risk Buildings (UK-SPEC HRB) for engineers and technicians. Registration for Engineers competent to work on HRBs in key disciplines like Structures, Building Services, Façade Engineering, and Fire Engineering is underway.

Engineers seeking HRB competency will need to demonstrate specific skills and experience outlined in the standard and will be assessed by licensed professional institutions, such as CABE, CIBSE, IFE, IStructE and ICE. The Façade Engineering Annex, developed by SFE Members following the Engineering Council’s UK-SPEC requirements, outlines key criteria for Façade Engineers. Notably, a Chartered Engineer (CEng) qualification is a prerequisite among other technical criteria for which the individual should have a thorough understanding.

The Façade Engineering Annex is a positive step towards ensuring high-quality building envelope designs and requires an industry-wide engagement. The updated Route to Chartership via SFE and full guidance can be found here.
