Leading UK building institutions representing the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (UK NZCBS) meet with MP Chris Skidmore, author of Mission Zero: independent review of Net Zero, to discuss the progress and future of net zero carbon buildings in the UK.
The UK NZCBS was established to provide a clear, comprehensive and credible standard for new and retrofitted buildings to achieve net zero carbon emissions. The standard sets a clear pathway for the building industry to achieve net zero, in line with the UK's 2050 target to reduce emissions to net zero.
During the meeting, MP Chris Skidmore and representatives of the UK NZCBS discussed the key findings and recommendations of the Net Zero review, and how the standard can help drive the delivery of net zero carbon buildings in the UK.
The discussions covered a wide range of topics including the role of government in driving adoption of the standard, the importance of industry-wide collaboration, and the benefits of using it as a benchmark for best practice.
"We are delighted to have had the opportunity to meet with MP Chris Skidmore and discuss the important role that the UK NZCBS can play in helping the UK reach its 2050 net zero carbon target.
The Standard can underpin many of the recommendations which are put forward in Mission Zero, such as the Net Zero Performance Certificate, the Carbon Calculator, the Future Homes Standard and the work of a potential Office for Net Zero Delivery – all of which need to be based on a commonly adopted measurement of net zero for buildings and assets” said David Partridge, Chair of the Governance Board for the UK NZCBS.
About the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard
The UK NZCBS is developing the UK's first Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard. Leading industry organisations BBP, BRE, the Carbon Trust, CIBSE, IStructE, LETI, RIBA, RICS, and UKGBC have joined forces to champion this initiative.
Whilst significant progress has been made in defining what ‘net zero’ means for buildings in the UK, a process of market analysis showed a clear demand for a single, agreed methodology. The UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard will enable industry to robustly prove their built assets are net zero carbon and in line with our nation’s climate targets.
