Alan Obrart was a bright light in our industry. Committed to doing ‘what was right’, he strived to raise standards through better and more accessible education. Whilst to many he will be known as a stalwart of AIRAH, he was also a mover and shaker with CIBSE and Engineers Australia (through SBSE).
Demarcation and turf wars just got in the way of doing what was right, so he cut through the nonsense and got on with what was needed. For CIBSE, he was hugely influential. He sat on the NSW Committee as an advisor, and his mission was to bring together the various professional institutions to deliver cutting-edge CPD.
He was unassuming but well-connected. When it was decided to hold a session on ethics, he arranged for a Supreme Court Judge to be the speaker. On fire services, he knew all the best people so it was not surprising that technical sessions often pulled in 150 attendees. He inspired his colleagues with his passion, drive and sincerity.
Vale Alan Obrart, one of a kind.
