Entry is now open for the 2021 CIBSE ANZ Young Engineers Awards. The theme of the competition is “Preparing for the Unknown”. CIBSE ANZ is calling on emerging building services industry professionals to submit an entry to one of three categories:
- Mark Griffin – Student of the Year
- CIBSE ANZ – Graduate of the Year
- Jack Pirie – Young Engineer of the Year

To offer some assistance and insight for potential entrants, in the lead up to the awards, CIBSE will showcase video presentations and interviews with some of our outstanding 2020 finalists.

2020 Mark Griffin – Student of the year finalist
I was working on my thesis while submitting the idea for the awards, and the exposure from CIBSE helped me to reach a wider audience in the industry. I got an opportunity to share my idea as well as gain valuable feedback from it.
It took roughly two days to compile my ideas, which were inspired by my thesis work that I had been working on for over three months. I used my friend's DSLR for recording my video entry and Final Cut Pro for editing purposes. I also used some stock videos to enhance the presentation.
The insight I gained from this experience is that passion for what you do and keeping connected to your network who have similar interests as yourself facilitates one's career in the right direction.
I believe CIBSE serves as the best platform when you struggle to start a career in the building services industry. Even if you are unsure about career choices, CIBSE's industry leaders and mentors can help one realise their true passion, even if it is outside their industry.
By participating, I am more engaged and committed to being a part of the CIBSE. The encouragement throughout my professional journey helped me land a job, and I must thank the organisers for facilitating these amazing events. I gained more confidence and better knowledge and awareness of the industry trends happening at the moment.
I finished my coursework and graduated at the end of last year with a Masters in Engineering Management.
I am currently working as a Mechanical Engineer for a consulting team. I switched my role from the automotive industry to being a building service engineer, and I love every moment of it. The excitement, challenges and the desire for success would be almost incomparable to other domains.
