On Saturday 9th November, the Society of Light and Lighting hosted #PocketsOfLight at St Lawrence’s Church. Abbots Langley.
Following the school summer holiday, Kristina Allison and Matthew Wright, visited 3 schools in Watford, Parmiter’s School, St. Michael’s Catholic High School and Future Academies Watford, to talk to students from Year 10 and Year 11 (ages 14 to 16) from Art, Design & Technology and Photography GCSE level classes about light. The students then crafted thoughtful designs honouring Remembrance, for the facades of St Lawrence Church.
Kristina Allison, WSP and President Elect SLL said
“I’m passionate about sharing knowledge about lighting and lighting design especially with school age pupils. We can inspire and guide the next stage of their learning journey. So, whether that is further education or in work life, the engagement can support their critical thinking, team building skills and creative insight into the world around them”.
The winning designs were selected based on four criteria: creative merit, technical, theme and buildability. Once the designs were chosen, and Kristina and members of the SLL community brought these designs to life. In the evening members of the local community visited the church to see the designs with many commenting on how fitting they were for the evening.
Juan Ferrari, Hoare Lea, said
“It was truly rewarding to see the local community gather and witness the impact of these young artists’ visions. Their creativity, combined with the beautiful setting, created a reflective and respectful atmosphere that resonated with everyone present.”.
Our thanks go to all involved, but especially Kristina Allison and those that supported her; Chris Dicks, Elliott Stone, Fiona Fanning, Helen Loomes, Jonathan Rush, Juan Ferrari, Matthew Wright, Ryan Rolph, Scott Pengelly, Sean O'Callaghan and Simon Fisher.
