CIBSE is pleased to share its updated Climate Action Plan, showcasing a renewed commitment to driving sustainability and supporting the built environment sector in achieving net zero carbon goals. This updated plan reflects CIBSE’s proactive approach to tackling climate change and emphasises the importance of collaboration, education, and innovation in delivering a low-carbon future.

A cornerstone of the plan is CIBSE’s pledge to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The document outlines a comprehensive strategy, detailing actions to reduce emissions, adapt to climate change, and foster resilience across the industry. As a professional institution, CIBSE remains dedicated to setting robust standards, collaborating with key stakeholders, and promoting sustainable practices within the sector.

Education and training are integral to the plan, with updates to engineering course guidelines and the development of new training programs. These initiatives aim to equip professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving industry. In addition, CIBSE’s active role in shaping policy is underscored by its contributions to consultations, advocacy for better building performance, and partnerships with organisations to influence climate-related policies.

Central to the plan is the continued development of guidance and standards that support low-carbon and climate-resilient buildings. From addressing embodied carbon in construction materials to improving building performance evaluations, CIBSE is driving forward initiatives that align with sustainability goals. The plan also highlights the importance of retrofitting existing buildings, emphasising this as a key strategy to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions.

The recent update introduces several notable initiatives. These include the pilot version of the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard, the launch of a Lifecycle Carbon Assessment training programme, and expanded guidance for TM65, addressing embodied carbon in more systems and regions. The plan also details efforts to enhance heat pump technology and improve system sizing, further supporting heat decarbonisation.

To recognise the efforts of industry leaders and organisations championing sustainability, CIBSE has introduced new awards celebrating leadership and building performance. The plan also calls on individuals and organisations to mirror its climate action measures, such as operational energy modelling and offering net-zero options.

The relocation of CIBSE’s headquarters to the new head office in Farringdon exemplifies the organisation’s commitment to sustainability. The new premises will prioritise energy efficiency, carbon performance, and staff wellbeing, with plans to monitor and evaluate performance against pre-pandemic benchmarks. Other key updates include the introduction of mandatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) on sustainability for all corporate members and the establishment of a new embodied carbon sub-committee as part of CIBSE’s Sustainability Special Interest Group.

The updated Climate Action Plan reinforces CIBSE’s leadership in advancing climate action within the built environment. By providing clear guidance, fostering collaboration, and investing in research and education, CIBSE is helping to shape a sustainable future for the sector.
