Dr. Anastasia Mylona, CIBSE’s Technical Director, recently shared expert insights on retrofit insulation in an interview on BBC Radio 4’s You and Yours programme. She discussed the importance of home insulation as the most effective way to keep energy bills down while maintaining a comfortable indoor environment - warm in winter and cool in summer. Additionally, she highlighted the critical role of ventilation in preventing damp and ensuring a healthy home environment.
Dr. Mylona also spoke about the Retrofit Revisit research, published last year via CIBSE. This study, co-authored by Marion Baeli (Principal – Sustainability Transformation at 10 Design) and Julie Godefroy (CIBSE’s Head of Net Zero), examined the long-term performance of ten retrofitted housing projects across different locations and archetypes.
The findings revealed that while minor fluctuations in performance occurred over a decade, retrofitted homes consistently outperformed non-retrofitted housing stock. Residents also reported improved comfort and lower energy bills, especially during colder months, reinforcing the long-term benefits of retrofitting.
The interview provides valuable insights into how retrofit insulation can contribute to energy efficiency and sustainable living. You can listen to Dr. Mylona’s interview on BBC Radio 4 You and Yours HERE (starting at 31:20).
