Gary Chiang, the new regional chair for CIBSE Hong Kong welcomes opportunities for collaboration, improved building performance, and membership growth.
Addressing the CIBSE Hong Kong AGM, Gary Chiang focused his speech on growth for CIBSE in the region. The AGM was held on 7 March and guests included Kevin Mitchell, CIBSE President; Ruth Carter, CIBSE CEO; and Dr Hywel Davies, CIBSE Chief Technical Officer.
Gary opened by sharing his appreciation for the Hong Kong regional committee, including the outgoing Chair, TC Chan. He acknowledged the committees’ achievements over the previous few years, despite the challenges they all faced due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Looking forward, Gary shared his thoughts on how the region should focus on growth.
“I believe, this year, we have a lot more to do to bring our members back to normal. We are organising more physical events as a platform to socialising and networking and to share views. We are planning field visits to manufacturers, to bring in new technology to this field. This year, I’m sure we will fill our schedule and connect our members.”
Outlining priorities for the regional committee and his time as chair, Gary put membership growth at the top of the list. Through continuing to support members and engineers with CPD courses, seminars and regional events, Gary hopes to gain an understanding of what members in the region need, adapting to meet this demand.
The regional committee will continue to work in collaboration with the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers (HKIE), ASHRAE Hong Kong Chapter, and Hong Kong Polytechnic University to deliver the annual technical symposium, which takes place in November.
Kevin Mitchell set out to inspire the next generation of engineers when he became CIBSE President in May 2022. In his address as incoming chair, Gary highlighted the important role of the CIBSE Young Engineers Network – Hong Kong in supporting, representing, and recruiting early career engineers.
“I am keen to develop more training and support to them. I will work with our YEN to develop new engagement programmes so that they can in one way learn more about Building Services to advance their engineering knowledge, but at the same time feel happy to be part this CIBSE family. We will explore how to extend our programme to colleges and schools.”
During the AGM, the region launched the 2023 CIBSE Hong Kong Awards. Building on the success of CIBSE Building Performance Awards, the CIBSE Hong Kong Awards 2023 are designed to drive organisations and engineering professionals to collaborate and deliver the most appropriate, cost‐effective solutions from design, right through to installation and beyond. They celebrate building services engineering in delivering efficiency, quality, safety and reducing operating costs, for the benefit of business and society. The 2023 Awards were launched as part of the CIBSE Hong Kong AGM on 07 March 2023.
