CIBSE is pleased to announce the winner of the 2024 Ken Dale Travel Bursary, a prestigious award offering a £4,000 travel bursary to support innovative research in the building services sector. This year, we saw eight outstanding finalists present a diverse range of topics, from sustainable innovations in film production to low-energy smart ventilation systems.

However, it was William Holley, a Mechanical Engineer at Buro Happold Engineering, who captivated our judges with his proposal, The Transition to Low Carbon Heat: A Holistic Investigation into the Integration of Heat Pump Technology into the Built Environment.

William will embark on a journey across Germany, Finland, China and Japan to develop comprehensive case studies aimed at providing engineers with a deeper understanding of how to effectively integrate heat pumps into their projects.

William said: 'I’m thrilled to be chosen as this year’s CIBSE Ken Dale Bursary winner! I’m really looking forward to exploring the topic of integration of heat pump technology into the built environment. My goal is to present design guidance and cutting edge case studies from around the world'.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to William and wish him the best as he sets out on his travels. We eagerly anticipate reading his final report.

The Ken Dale Travel Bursary was established to honour Ken Dale's significant contributions to the Institution and the building services profession. This award is open to CIBSE members through a competitive process. Candidates are shortlisted based on their proposals, and final selections are made after presentations by shortlisted candidates during the interview stage.
