With the new year in sight, the Christmas break is a great time for future leaders to start thinking about their response to the 2021 CIBSE ANZ’s Young Engineers Awards question.
The Awards which were held online this year will welcome Australia and New Zealand guests in-person at Parliament of NSW in Sydney on Thursday 22 July 2021, government health recommendations permitting.
Now in its 5th year the CIBSE ANZ Young Engineers Awards recognise outstanding students, graduates and young professionals within the building services engineering industry.
For the video component of the entry, the overarching theme this year is Preparing for the unknown - How do we create spaces designed to last several generations while retaining flexibility to change according to physical requirements, technology and cultural trends?
Students are asked:
From your personal learning experiences and with a review of available information on CIBSE’s Knowledge Portal, tell us how your teaching spaces could have been made more capable of keeping students on campus or delivering a better virtual experience.
Graduates are asked:
What do you wish you’d been taught in your studies to help prepare you for the disruptions of 2020? What have you learnt about how buildings have changed in the way they operate and how could this have been addressed through design?
Young Engineers are asked
What have you learnt about how buildings have changed in the way they operate and how could this have been addressed through design? Looking forward, how do we create spaces designed to last several generations while retaining flexibility to change according to physical requirements, technology and cultural trends?
Video entries allow the judges to see behind the words and really appreciate the passion of the entrants. This component also allow entrants to show off their creativity and presentation skills which all add to their scores.
Jeff Tsang, Mechanical Engineer with WGE and finalist in 2019 and 2020 said “ The participation allowed me to further elaborate my professional work experience and reflect on the projects I wasengaged in. This allowed me to rethink ways to make buildings more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. Personally, the main benefits were the video editing and presentation skills gained during the preparation process."
The competition will be open for entries until 27 May 2021 however early submissions may be entitled to some review comments from past winners. The full terms and conditions of entry will be available on the website from early January but university students, recent graduates and young engineering professionals with up to 7 years industry experience should start thinking about their video response now.*
*2021 applicants must hold CIBSE membership. Full time student membership is free and, all membership applications can be made online.
