The Adaptation Reporting Power was introduced under the Climate Change Act 2008. It sets a requirement for infrastructure operators and public bodies to report on how they are addressing current and future climate impacts.
Objectives of the consultation
Under the five yearly cycle of the Climate Change Act 2008, the Government is required to set out and consult on its strategy for the climate change adaptation reporting. This strategy is required to be laid in Parliament alongside the National Adaptation Programme (NAP).
In the next round of reporting the Government has proposed to build on the voluntary approach established in the second round of reporting, drawing on the lessons from previous rounds and agreeing sectoral and organisational proposals for reporting. Government does not intend to issue directions under the third round of the Adaptation Reporting Power, but has proposed that reporting is done in line with the reporting power on a voluntary basis.

CIBSE responded to this consultation highlighting that the adaptation to climate change is not voluntary, our climate is changing and we have to adapt. We need to understand more clearly what adaptation measures are already in place so there needs to be a level of mandate to the reporting exercise. If that can be linked to using reporting required for other purposes then that efficiency should be adopted, but we cannot afford to base our national adaptation to climate change, which is a serious and urgent challenge, to be based on voluntary reporting of actions and outcomes already in place.
