Applications open for new Chair and members of the Department for Transport Science Advisory Council

Are you interested in using your science and engineering expertise and skills to directly influence government decision-making as it delivers an exciting transport agenda, building a better and cleaner transport system? Department for Transport (DfT) are inviting applications for a new Chair and up to five new members of their Science Advisory Council (SAC) – a committee of academic and industry experts who provide independent, strategic advice and challenge to the Department on science and technology issues.
 
For the role of Chair, DfT are looking for candidates with a strong understanding of the interface between science and policy, strong professional networks, and the skills to lead a diverse group of influential experts to deliver high-quality advice to Ministers and senior DfT officials. The role, currently held by Professor Lord Robert Mair from the University of Cambridge, involves working in partnership with the CSA and other DfT officials to provide strategic leadership to the SAC.
 
DfT are also looking for new members who have expertise in one of the following specific technical areas relevant to transport, together with the broader skills to contribute effectively across all SAC activities:

  • Data, digital and telecommunications
  • Autonomy and artificial intelligence
  • Transport risk, resilience and/or security research
  • Environmental impacts of transport
  • Batteries and electrification
  • Transport energy systems, including hydrogen and/or other sustainable transport fuels
  • Rail technology and engineering

The roles of Chair and member involve a time commitment of approximately 10 and 8 days per year respectively, with remuneration offered.
