Step Two: Academic Requirements

Checking for academic eligibility as part of the professional registration process ensures that professionals have the necessary foundational knowledge, competence, and preparedness for professional practice. It promotes standardisation, quality assurance, and compliance with industry and regulatory standards, ultimately enhancing the credibility and integrity of the engineering profession.

Chartered Engineer (CEng)

  • An MEng.
  • A Bachelor’s honours degree in engineering or technology plus a Master’s degree or Engineering Doctorate (EngD).
  • An accredited Bachelor’s honours degree in engineering or technology started prior to September 1999.
  • Washington Accord accredited Bachelor’s degree. (Further learning to Master’s level is required from 2015 intake.)
  • Engineers Europe 2nd cycle degree qualification.

Incorporated Engineer (IEng)

  • A Bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology.
  • An HNC (8 level H units) or HND in engineering or technology (started prior to September 1999).
  • A Sydney Accord degree.
  • Engineers Europe Engineering qualification at 1st cycle.

Engineering Technician (EngTech)

  • Successful completion of an approved apprenticeship or other work-based learning programme.
  • An approved level 3 (or above) NVQ/SVQ in an engineering discipline.
  • An approved level 6 (or above) in the Scottish Credit & Qualifications Framework.
  • Individually assessed engineering/technology qualifications at an equivalent level.
