Step One: Competence Eligibility

Checking for competence eligibility is essential for maintaining high standards of practice, protecting public safety and ensuring professional accountability. It ensures that registered professionals are capable, responsible, and committed to continuous improvement and ethical practice.

You will be required to demonstrate all competences in a written Engineering Practice Report submitted with your application and at interview stage.

Chartered Engineer (CEng)

  • Significance: A high-level professional title indicating a significant level of expertise and competence in engineering
  • Requirements: Typically requires an accredited bachelor's degree in engineering (or equivalent), further learning to master's level (or equivalent), and substantial professional experience
  • Competence: Demonstrates the ability to develop appropriate solutions to engineering problems, manage complex engineering projects, and show leadership and innovation
  • Aligned with CIBSE corporate membership grades of MCIBSE (Member) and FCIBSE (Fellow).

Incorporated Engineer (IEng)

  • Significance: For engineers who are able to maintain and manage applications of current and developing technology and are engaged in technical and commercial management
  • Requirements: Usually requires an accredited bachelor's or higher diploma in engineering (or equivalent), plus professional experience
  • Competence: Demonstrates the ability to apply technology and manage engineering operations, typically in a practical and hands-on role
  • Aligned with CIBSE corporate membership grade of ACIBSE (Associate)

Engineering Technician (EngTech)

  • Significance: for engineering technicians who apply proven techniques and procedures to the solution of practical engineering problems
  • Requirements: Generally requires an appropriate level 3 qualification (such as a national diploma) in engineering (or equivalent), along with relevant work experience
  • Competence: Demonstrates practical experience and proficiency in applying technical knowledge and skills in a specific field of engineering
  • Aligned to CIBSE corporate membership grade of LCIBSE (Licentiate)
