The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and the Society of Light and Lighting (SLL) are pleased to announce the launch of this brand-new Technical Memorandum seeking to identify the extent of current knowledge and provide a framework for action and assessment for all within the lighting industry.

The project was led by SLL immediate past president, Bob Bohannon MSc., FSLL MIET and managed by Kristina Allison CEng MCIBSE MSLL,.TM66 - Creating a circular economy in the lighting industry, is the result of a cross industry collaboration and a desire to provide practical guidance and tools to enable people to develop a circular, sustainable approach to lighting and building services engineering more broadly.
TM66 firstly explains what the Circular Economy is, and then sets out sector-by-sector the affects and how they can adopt circular principles. It includes a review of current legislation, up-to-date case studies to demonstrate the circular economy already in action, and FAQs. The Circular Economy Assessment Methods (CEAM), turns a complex subject into an easy-to-understand star rating, giving manufacturers and specifiers targeted, useable, independent metrics to compare products and strive for improvement.
With an initial focus on lighting, CIBSE intends to use TM66 as a model for advancing the circular potential across many industries. Additionally, this new guidance sits alongside TM65 – Embodied carbon in building services and TM67 – Electrification of buildings for net-zero, helping to increase knowledge and facilitate more sustainable practice across the board.
Prior to publication, the concept behind the new guidance won the highest accolade, Platinum, at the Build back Better Awards, judged by an independent panel of industry thought leaders. The judges also awarded the concept Green Certification.
On developing the guidance, Bob Bohannon, Head of Policy and Academy at the LIA commented:
“The aim of TM66 is to drive the move to sustainable futures. We must all asses and report on not just our commercial performance, but our environmental impact. The increasingly visible effects of man-made climate change, the COP26 conference and the questions over energy and resource scarcity have made the move towards a Circular Economy never more relevant than now. The answer is all about design, not just product design, but the design of an eco-system of scheme design, facilities management and supporting services that keep products delivering value for the longest period of time.”
