The BBC hits the headlines as it paves the way for reducing energy consumption in the television broadcasting industry, with a landmark study into the feasibility of low energy lighting use in TV studios.

As part of its new sustainability campaign "The Difference", the BBC commissioned Arup to study the feasibility of low energy lighting use in TV studios. This was the first time a TV broadcaster had recognised the importance of conducting a detailed investigation into sustainable lighting technologies.

Arup's study revealed the potential to save between 30% and 50% of production energy lighting costs by using more efficient light sources and improving energy management. The overall potential of annual carbon savings was estimated as just over 8,000tCO2eq (tonnes of CO2 equivalent), a figure reviewed and approved by The Carbon Trust, which funded part of the study as a result.

To inform and persuade production staff in the television broadcasting industry to adopt low energy lighting solutions, Arup produced a "one stop shop" low energy lighting guide, which was presented at a workshop and is available online from the BBC website.

The guide takes into account the creative, technological and operational aspects of TV production, and reflects how behaviour can be changed. Following the project, several TV productions have adopted the low energy lighting solutions, resulting in energy savings of up to 40%. The BBC is recognised as an organisation at the pinnacle of the television broadcasting industry and, as a consequence, is highly influential. This ground-breaking project has allowed the BBC to pave the way for reducing energy consumption in the industry.
