Referencing in Microsoft Word

Please do not use footnotes or endnotes. To use Microsoft Word’s referencing function:

  • select the ‘References’ menu
  • ensure the referencing style is set to ‘Harvard’ – it sometimes defaults to APA
  • when you would like to add a reference in the text, select ‘insert citation’
  • fill out the relevant information in the pop-up box, as in the screenshot below:

It’s important to select the correct publication type from the ‘Type of Source’ dropdown list, and to tick ‘Show all bibliography fields’. Please note that if the author or the producer/publisher is not a person, this information should go into the ‘Corporate Author’ and the ‘Production company’ box – otherwise, the author above would be listed in the reference list as ‘Committee, E.A.’, and that’s not what we’re after!

When you have finished writing your publication, with your cursor on the final page of your document, go to the ‘References’ tab above. Below the reference type dropdown menu, where it says ‘Harvard’, there is a dropdown menu for inserting a bibliography or a ‘works cited’ list. Select ‘works cited’. This will create an automatic list at the end of your publication, which you can then rename ‘References’.
