Overview

The Special Interest Group Elected Members, in conjunction with the rest of your committee:

  • produce high quality technical events
  • recommend updates to CIBSE knowledge publications and training
  • raise awareness of relevant policy to the CIBSE Technical team

Elected members can fulfil a variety of roles, according to the needs and activities of the SIG committee you sit on. Here are some examples of roles you can take on:

  • Education and Careers Champion
  • University Liaison
  • Events Organiser​
  • Membership Champion
  • Communications Champion/Newsletter lead​
  • Consultation Champion
  • Knowledge Generation Panel Liaison

Below are some examples of what you might do as an Elected Member of the committee - these are flexible roles, so you may combine different responsibilities depending on your interests and the committee's goals. 

What you’ll do (Events Organiser):

  • Help plan and organise events from start to finish
  • Work with the Group volunteers and CIBSE staff to promote events
  • Work with other professional bodies to create cross-industry events 
  • Attend events or arrange for volunteers to support on the day, or delegate to others on the committee
  • Collect feedback and help improve future events

What you’ll do (Newsletter Lead):

  • Research and write engaging content for regular newsletters

  • Collaborate with Group volunteers to gather news, updates, and announcements

  • Interview members or speakers to create features, profiles, or event recaps

  • Help plan content schedules and align newsletters with key dates and activities

  • Edit and proofread contributions from others to ensure consistency and quality

  • Work with Social Media Manager and CIBSE staff to promote newsletter signups and engage with readers for feedback

What you'll do (Social Media Manager):

  • Create and schedule content across platforms (e.g. LinkedIn, Twitter/X, Instagram)

  • Promote events including webinars, site visits, and technical talks

  • Share industry news, thought leadership, and member insights

  • Design simple graphics or collaborate with others to produce visual content

  • Monitor engagement, respond to comments/messages, and grow our audience

  • Coordinate with fellow volunteers and CIBSE staff to align messaging

  • Keep a consistent tone and visual identity across all posts

What you'll do (Consultation Champion):

  • Monitor policy developments, consultations, and regulatory updates relevant to the built environment and work with CIBSE staff to provide relevant activities to members

  • Summarise complex policy documents into clear, accessible briefings for the Group members

  • Suggest opportunities for the Group to engage with emerging consultations

  • Attend relevant events or webinars and report back key takeaways
