The SFE, in collaboration with CWCT, has provided essential guidance on the application of Regulation 7(2) banning combustible materials, while also contributing to key standards and government-led research projects aimed at improving façade safety. This partnership strengthens industry competence and ensures clarity in fire safety regulations.

The Society of Façade Engineering (SFE), administered by CIBSE, has been actively raising the bar for professional competence and knowledge within the façade engineering industry. A prime example of this effort is the growing collaboration between the SFE and the Centre for Window and Cladding Technology (CWCT).

In response to the introduction of the Building (Amendment) Regulation 2018, and specifically Regulation 7(2) banning combustible materials, both SFE and CWCT took the lead in offering much-needed guidance to the industry. This collaboration involved a wide range of professionals, including façade engineers, fire engineers, architects, contractors, and building control experts, working together to clarify more than 50 potential ambiguities in applying the regulation.

Their first guidance document was published in September 2020, with an updated edition released in July 2023. This vital resource has seen widespread industry adoption, with over 1,800 downloads since the latest edition's release. The collaboration has also driven broader engagement with the construction sector through articles published in key industry journals.

Beyond this guidance, the SFE has contributed to essential standards and research, including participation in drafting PAS 9980, which provides a framework for assessing cladding risks. Additionally, SFE experts are playing a key role in ongoing government research projects into the fire performance of balconies, spandrels, and laminated glass, as well as the testing of external cladding systems. Through these efforts, SFE continues to support the industry in navigating complex regulations and ensuring safer, more resilient buildings.
