CWCT Updates on Fire Guidance

News
26 Sept 24

It was previously reported that a revised issue of the CWCT/SFE regulation 7(2) fire guidance had been published (www.cwct.co.uk/pages/cwct-sfe-fire-guidance).  This update has now been downloaded more than 1700 times.

It was reported at last year’s CWCT AGM that our guidance document is not well known outside of the façade world.  This news was greatly concerning.  Without a consistent approach to the application of regulation 7(2) and regulation 7(3), there is uncertainty about the materials that can be used and the potential for conflict between different parties. As such, the different sectors of the industry need to familiarise themselves with this guidance.  We have therefore spent time this year promoting this document more widely, including publishing journal articles and participating in a webinar aimed at fire engineers.

We all have a responsibility to share knowledge and best practice.  Please help spread the word.

Work on CWCT fire Technical Notes is progressing well.  Four new Technical Notes are being drafted to replace TN98.  These are:

  • TN113, Fire performance of facades – Introduction,
  • TN114, Fire performance of facades – Use of combustible materials,
  • TN115, Fire performance of facades – Application to curtain walling,
  • TN116, Fire performance of facades – Application to built-up walls walls.

The first two TNs in this series should be published soon.  TN113 will provide an overview of the building regulation requirements and approved document B guidance relevant to the façade.  TN114 will summarise the various different recommendations relating to the reaction to fire of the façade.  In isolation, these recommendations straightforward, however when considered collectively and with regulation 7(2), guidance is required to provide logical and pragmatic interpretation.  Once published, we will present a webinar to help disseminate this important information.
