On board the Sydney Heritage Fleet's Waratah, influential and key industry guests joined CIBSE ANZ on a cruise on Sydney Harbour to recognise the outstanding contributions from leading students and graduates, continually demonstrating engineering excellence within the built environment.

Alex provided an incredibly impressive resume for a recent graduate, having worked within the health, transport and commercial sectors. The judges were particularly impressed with his experience on the Illawarra Health Precinct Project, where he was the lead mechanical designer charged with integrating a practical trigeneration plant and chilled beam technology."
The judging panel also recognized Alex’s work in Project Coordination, where he was responsible for the delivery of multi-disciplinary projects, creating desirable solutions for his clients. Alex’s impressive resume and experience working with multiple disciplines make him an outstanding selection to win this award. Well deserved congratulations to Alex who received the prestigious CIBSE ANZ engraved glass trophy, certificate and a cheque for $1000.
Graduate of the Year - Highly commended runner up | Bin Chen, WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff

Bin’s strong analytical skills and experiences working in a range of jurisdictions and countries was particularly impressive to the judging panel. Being able to apply the principals of building services design in developments from convention centres to residential, commercial and mixed use facilities certainly made him stand out from the crowd. A distinction that the judging panel wished to recognise with the award of highly commended runners up within the Graduate of the Year category.
Congratulations Bin for his efforts, who also received the CIBSE ANZ engraved glass runner up trophy and framed certificate.
Student of the Year |Lorna Hennessy, AECOM & UTS
CIBSE ANZ Chair, Ian Small presents Lorna with her Student Award.
Lorna has just completed her second year at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) and is completing her internship at AECOM presently. The judging panel was extremely impressed with her enthusiasm for learning, as well as her knowledge of how the various building services disciplines interact to effect the overall building performance. Her poster submission did not just provide detailed and informative suggestions for services upgrades to the UTS Central Tower Building, (currently being redeveloped), but also provided estimated cost savings and payback periods.
Lorna is a well deserved winner of this award, having not just demonstrated her knowledge and experience with her submission, but also triggered broader discussion of architectural styles with the affectionate claim that the UTS Central Tower was “Sydney’s Ugliest Building.” Congratulations to Lorna for her submission and continued studies and support, who received the CIBSE ANZ glass engraved trophy, framed certificate and cheque for $1000.
In addition, Lorna also received a copy of the newly published Faber & Kells Heating & Air-Conditioning of Buildings 11th edition, presented by Paul Yunnie, kindly donated by Doug Oughton and Ant Wilson, lead authors of the publication, sponsored by AECOM.
Ian Small, Chair of CIBSE ANZ, said “It is really enlightening to see young engineers getting involved with some great and innovative projects, this is not only excellent for our industry, but also proves how important it is recognising the key development and progression that our industry is focussing on young engineers here in the CIBSE Australia and New Zealand Region.”
Ian further thanked Paul Angus and Ian Van Eerden for being pivotal in organising another successful awards evening.
About the Student and Graduate of the Year Awards
The Awards are presented annually at the CIBSE ANZ function. The aim of these awards is to provide a focus on the next generation of engineers within the field of building services and built environment.
This year’s awards was held on the 3rd of March 2016, and judged by leading members from the consultancy and construction/manufacturing industries, and educational Institutions after an assessment of submissions received.
