Protecting Our Dark Skies

The presentation begins by defining “Dark Skies” and references the IDA (International Dark skies Association) and light pollution.

Next, we explore the IDA before defining light pollution, how light pollution has increased, and the challenges posed by light pollution. These include the negative impacts on human health, disruption to wildlife, wasted energy and finance, blocking out our view of the universe, and the contribution to climate change, all of which are explored separately in detail.

Then, we look at how we can protect our dark skies from the effects of light pollution. The three solutions explored are lantern shields, colour temperature and lighting controls.

LED Handrail

The presentation finishes by looking at case studies.  This course focuses on LED Handrail and the challenges designers face when specifying this light source. It covers the areas where LED handrail is used, whether LED handrail is suitable, what to consider when specifying LED handrail, what lighting standards designers should be working to within different sectors, what to consider when selecting a product and how to approach the lighting design.
