Medal Nominations FAQs
CIBSE Medals are a symbol of excellence, dedication, and vision across the built environment, recognising CIBSE Corporate Members (Licentiate, Associate, Member & Fellow), or CIBSE Affiliate Members and Members of CIBSE Societies), whose contributions have shaped the industry and advanced professional standards.
By honouring members' achievements, these Medals celebrate industry leaders, foster innovation, and reinforce CIBSE’s commitment to driving progress in sustainability, resilience, and technical excellence. This recognition also serves to inspire future generations, strengthening the profession’s impact on the built environment and society as a whole.
Only current CIBSE Corporate Members (Licentiate, Associate, Member & Fellow), or CIBSE Affiliate Members and Members of CIBSE Societies (some also posthumously) can be nominated for a Medal. Nominees should have a history of outstanding contributions to CIBSE or the profession, aligned with the criteria for each Medal.
Yes, the Nominations Panel has agreed that it is appropriate to consider proposals for posthumous Medals, provided they are made within two years of the death of the person being nominated / proposed.
To nominate someone for a CIBSE Medal, you need to be a CIBSE Corporate Member (Licentiate, Associate, Member, or Fellow), or a CIBSE Affiliate Member and Member of CIBSE Societies. The Nominee must also meet these requirements.
Please note: If you are on the CIBSE Nominations Panel, you cannot submit a nomination, be nominated or endorse a proposal for a CIBSE Medal.
Unfortunately, not. Self-nominations are not permitted.
The CIBSE Nominations Panel considers the following criteria for a Nominee:
- Length and depth of service to CIBSE
- Leadership and influence within the profession
- Contributions to the Institution and the industry
- Personal qualities, such as integrity and vision
The Medal winners will be notified via email at the end of summer and will receive an invitation to receive their Medal at the President's Awards Dinner. In 2025 this will take place on 10 October.
The full list of all individual Medals and Awards winners is on our Honorary Fellows and Medallists page. If you can’t find what you are looking for, please feel free to email us at [email protected].
Yes, please. This is not a legal process, but we would ask if you could either declare potential conflicts of interest or avoid them by getting a colleague or a committee to submit a proposal instead of yourself.

CIBSE's Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals recognise exceptional, outstanding, and distinguished service to CIBSE and the wider industry.
- Gold: Recognises lifetime achievement, typically marking over 25 years of exemplary service, leadership, and influence in the field.
- Silver: Recognises individuals with experience typically spanning over 15 years, who have played a key role in shaping CIBSE’s mission, advancing technical standards, education, or industry best practices.
- Bronze: Recognises distinguished service, typically over 10 years where individuals have demonstrated sustained commitment and impact through voluntary service, professional development, technical expertise, or advocacy within CIBSE and the wider industry.
We encourage Proposers to maintain the element of surprise when nominating someone for a CIBSE Medal. Keeping the nomination confidential helps ensure a more genuine and heartfelt recognition of the Nominee’s contributions. It also prevents any undue expectations or disappointment in case the nomination is not successful.
By keeping the process discreet, the Nominee will experience the full impact of being honoured by their peers when the Medal is announced. If additional information is required for the nomination, Proposers can seek input from colleagues or professional contacts without revealing the purpose.
Please don’t worry. Just choose the Medal that best matches the Nominee’s level of service. The CIBSE Nominations Panel will review and may suggest a different Medal if needed. Make sure both you and the Nominee are eligible CIBSE members: a CIBSE Corporate Member (Licentiate, Associate, Member & Fellow), or a CIBSE Affiliate Member and Member of CIBSE Societies.
Yes, but a separate nomination form must be completed for each individual being nominated. The person being nominated must be a CIBSE Corporate Member (Licentiate, Associate, Member & Fellow), or a CIBSE Affiliate Member and Member of CIBSE Societies.
- The Nominee's details - this includes their contact details, membership information and present post. They must be a CIBSE Corporate Member (Licentiate, Associate, Member & Fellow), or a CIBSE Affiliate Member and Member of CIBSE Societies.
- A justification statement detailing the Nominee's contributions and achievements.
- Details of four Endorsers who are also CIBSE Corporate Members (Licentiate, Associate, Member & Fellow), or CIBSE Affiliate Members and Members of CIBSE Societies.
Nominations are reviewed by the CIBSE Nominations Panel, which assesses them against the criteria for the respective Medal.
Recipients receive the Medal corresponding to their award (Gold, Silver, or Bronze) and formal recognition of their contributions.
If a Nominee is not selected for a CIBSE Medal, the Proposer can resubmit the nomination in future years. However, they must complete a new application and provide any additional supporting evidence to strengthen the case.
We believe that four strong Endorsers are sufficient to support your nomination. We leave it to your discretion if you would like to provide more Endorsers.
