Medal Nominations FAQs
CIBSE Medals are a symbol of excellence, dedication, and vision across the built environment, recognising corporate grade members of CIBSE or one of its societies (i.e. Associate, Member, or Fellow), whose contributions have shaped the industry and advanced professional standards.
By honouring members' achievements, these Medals celebrate industry leaders, foster innovation, and reinforce CIBSE’s commitment to driving progress in sustainability, resilience, and technical excellence. This recognition also serves to inspire future generations, strengthening the profession’s impact on the built environment and society as a whole.
Only current corporate grade members of CIBSE or one of its societies (some also posthumously) can be nominated for a Medal. Nominees should have a history of outstanding contributions to CIBSE or the profession, aligned with the criteria for each Medal. Members of the following grades can be nominated: Associate, Member, or Fellow.
Yes, the Nominations Panel has agreed that it is appropriate to consider proposals for posthumous Medals, provided they are made within two years of the death of the person being nominated / proposed.
You need to be an active corporate grade member of CIBSE or one of its societies (i.e. Associate, Member, or Fellow) to nominate another member for a CIBSE Medal. Even the person who you are nominating needs to be corporate grade member of CIBSE or one of its societies (i.e. Associate, Member, or Fellow).
However, if you are a member of the Nominations Panel, you won't be able to submit a CIBSE Medal nomination.
Unfortunately, not. Self-nominations are not permitted.
The CIBSE Nominations Panel considers the following criteria for a Nominee:
- Length and depth of service to CIBSE
- Leadership and influence within the profession
- Contributions to the Institution and the industry
- Personal qualities, such as integrity and vision
The CIBSE Medals are typically awarded in October at the President’s Awards Dinner.
The full list of all individual Medals and Awards winners is on our Honorary Fellows and Medallists page. If you can’t find what you are looking for, please feel free to email us at [email protected].
Yes, please. This is not a legal process, but we would ask if you could either declare potential conflicts of interest or avoid them by getting a colleague or a committee to submit a proposal instead of yourself.

CIBSE's Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals recognise exceptional, outstanding, and distinguished service to CIBSE and the wider industry.
- Gold: Recognises lifetime achievement, typically marking over 25 years of exemplary service, leadership, and influence in the field.
- Silver: Recognises individuals with experience typically spanning over 15 years, who have played a key role in shaping CIBSE’s mission, advancing technical standards, education, or industry best practices.
- Bronze: Recognises distinguished service, typically over 10 years where individuals have demonstrated sustained commitment and impact through voluntary service, professional development, technical expertise, or advocacy within CIBSE and the wider industry.
We encourage Proposers to maintain the element of surprise when nominating someone for a CIBSE Medal. Keeping the nomination confidential helps ensure a more genuine and heartfelt recognition of the Nominee’s contributions. It also prevents any undue expectations or disappointment in case the nomination is not successful.
By keeping the process discreet, the Nominee will experience the full impact of being honoured by their peers when the Medal is announced. If additional information is required for the nomination, Proposers can seek input from colleagues or professional contacts without revealing the purpose.
Please don’t worry. If you are not sure, just propose the Medal which you think comes closest to the level of service. The Nominations Panel will take a judgement and may well recommend a different Medal if that is more appropriate. All you need to ensure if that you as the Proposer, as well as the person that you are nominating / proposing hold a corporate grade membership of CIBSE or one of its societies i.e. Associate, Member, or Fellow.
Yes, but a separate nomination form must be completed for each individual being nominated. The person being nominated / proposed much hold a corporate grade membership of CIBSE or one of its societies (i.e. Associate, Member, or Fellow).
- The nominee's details - this includes their contact details, membership information (he/she must be a corporate grade member of CIBSE or one of its societies)* and present post.
- A justification statement detailing the nominee's contributions and achievements.
- Details of four endorsers who are also corporate members of CIBSE or one its societies*
*Corporate grade of membership should be either Associate, Member, or Fellow
Nominations are reviewed by the CIBSE Nominations Panel, which assesses them against the criteria for the respective Medal.
Recipients receive the Medal corresponding to their award (Gold, Silver, or Bronze) and formal recognition of their contributions.
If an individual has been nominated but is not selected for a CIBSE Medal, the Proposer may consider resubmitting the nomination in subsequent years with additional supporting evidence.
We believe that four strong Endorsers are sufficient to support your nomination. We leave it to your discretion if you would like to provide more Endorsers.
