This module deals with the pipework installation within a building that carries away waste water from sanitary fittings including WCs, wash basins, showers, sinks and floor gullies. This is known as Sanitary Pipework. Once this pipework goes below ground, it is termed “Drainage”. This course deals only with Sanitary Pipework – ie that above ground.
This module is also concerned only with Sanitary Pipework Systems that operate by gravity. There are vacuum systems and pumped systems but these have very particular requirements and make up only a very small fraction of Sanitary Pipework Systems in buildings. Specialist sanitary installations serving laboratories, commercial kitchens or industrial processes are also excluded from this module.
The design of Sanitary Pipework Systems is complex as it must handle liquids, solids and gases simultaneously and must be capable of dealing with widely fluctuating loads that are difficult to quantify. Furthermore, it connects the inside of our buildings directly with the sewers and conveys substances that are hazardous to health.
As a result, the design, installation, testing and maintenance of Sanitary Pipework Installations are heavily regulated in most countries and must comply with a myriad of Regulations and Standards. The Public Health Engineer needs to understand the principles that form the basis of these standards and regulations both to ensure compliance and also because there will be situations where standards are not applicable. It must also be remembered that regulations and standards set down the minimum requirements and some building projects will demand that these be exceeded.
